Looked at the posts on the EHM and also the ProVent. Still unclear on what the advantages are with the ProVent. The EHM looks like it can be done in less than 15min no fab of brackets, a lot cheeper and nothing to clean.
Thanks
Adrian

Just my 2 cents but disadvantage of EHM is some oil will probably eventually drip out of the hose on your driveway my wife hated that and having various streams of smoke coming out from under various parts of the Jeep. Disadvantage of the Provent is its really messy to clean it out periodically, sometimes leaving drips on the driveway, wife hates that.

Both reduce the crud in the CRD intake system, CRD likes that.

Provent is the legal way to do essentially what the EHM does... You can also do a DIY Provent for not much more $ than the EHM.

I had the EHM. It's messy, smells, and let's face it, it does drip oil on the road and I didn't like dripping oil on the beach when I took it off road.
I have this on mine. A lot cheaper then the "Provent" brand. http://www.jegs.com/i/Aerospace-Compone ... tId=749803
It does the same thing as a provent but it's slimmer design made mounting a lot cleaner. Also, make sure you use a good quality hose. I have a Gates branded 5/8th" heater hose running to mine. I've been too lazy to post pics but perhaps I'll take some this weekend as I won't have much to do.

Hows that working for you? Im looking to do something similar to what you have. How many miles have you had that for and is it easy to clean?

The EHM allows internal crankcase gases to be released directly into the atmosphere - something the EPA put their foot down on in the late 60's and early 70's. So, it's basically illegal for a passenger car driver to circumvent the emission control and could result in some trouble if you were to be discovered.

The Mann-Hummel Provent is a tried and true mod for both CRD'ers and VW TDI owners. It contains an oil-condensing filter and acts to seperate the oil mist from the crankcase gases before they are introduced to the intake pre-turbo, which makes it legal. I have one and it is not installed with a bracket, it simply sits in the space between my battery and master cylinder. the only problem I had was I let it go too long without draining the captured oil and some leaked out, but not enough to damage anything.

CRD Guy, the set up I have has been on since June and is easy to clean. Mounted low along the radiator on the passenger side it's really un noticeable unless you're looking for it. ( It's down under the air box)
I will get some pics and post but the set up I use has a drain valve that I hooked another hose to and run down along the radiator with a check ball valve on the bottom. I put the oil pan under it after I'm done with an oil change and let it drain for a bit. After about 6,000 miles you get a surprising amount of oil in the can, but not more then an 1/8th of a qt of oil total. So even if you didn't drain it every oil change and drained it every other you'll be fine. No mess either.
The breather cap is nice to.
It's a real simple set up.
I notice you're in LI. If you wanted to make a trip to the shop I get my work done at here in NJ would be more then happy to introduce you to the guy. He installed the provent, egr, and all other mechanical things that I don't have the time or patience for

Partially true. Sure, gassers have had PCV valves and such for quite a while, but few diesels have had them until relatively recently. Interesting that my '06 Jeep Liberty CRD 2.8L has a CCV closed system, but my '06 Cummins ISX 15L has an EPA approved "elephant hose" system. Let's see... I put on approximately 145,000 miles a year at an average 7 mpg in my semi (along with hundreds of thousands of other commercial vehicles), venting the crankcase to the air with the blessing of the EPA. I have really no problem doing the elephant hose mod to my CRD that does around 25,000 miles a year with an average of 26 mpg. Less than 11,000 Liberty CRD's running around the country side with only percentage of them having an EHM done versus over a million commercial semi's running around the same territory with EPA approved crankcase ventalation to the atmosphere. Does anyone besides me see a contradiction in this? But then, the worse thing that for anyone to hear (whether they realize it or not) is "your government is here to help you".

Illegal? Probably. But legal issues rarely are determined by logic. Just like it is illegal to allow someone under 21 to buy and consume alcoholic beverages, but it is perfectly legal to kill and mame for life these same under 21 folks in the military. With so many laws on the books, we are all in violation of some law, somewhere. At this stage of my life, I really am not going to worry about the EPA getting their panties in a wad over my CRD venting to the atmosphere. Not when my semi and other equipment can do it legally. Gassers do not have the same situational conditions that diesels have in using a closed system. Gassers generally do not have soot laden exhaust gasses being mixed with oily crankcase gases in the intake of the engine. So I generally have had no problem or did I modify the PCV system of a gasser.

To each his own.

There is a substantial cost difference between some sort of provent and ehm. I did my ehm for the whopping sum of less than $10. I haven't seen a provent style system for even close to that cost.

There are a number of DIY Provents on here that were assembled for ~$20. I plan on building one myself once the weather warms up a bit.

That is where I put mine as well and I noticed it was rubbing on the ECM connector the other day. Needless to say the connector was losing that battle slowly. No major damage yet, but I need to find a better fix than the piece of duct tape I stuck between them. Just something to keep an eye on if you didn't use a bracket.
