I recently had a bunch of stuff stolen at the beach...the key to my Jeep being one of them. I have one original key left now that has the keyless entry stuff on it. I ordered a spare key on ebay that doesnt have the keyless entry stuff on it but has a transponder chip in it. I tried getting a regular key cut and it would stall after a few seconds. Is there a way to get this new key with the chip in it to work without having to go to the dealership? There is instructions that came with it that show how to program it when you have two original keys, but I only have one.
Thanks
Sam

When I bought my CRD used, it came with only one key. If I remember correctly, I had a local locksmith program the second one...

IIRC, there are instructions in the owners manual for programming a new key. I think.

See if this helps....

Programming a new keyless entry remote

To begin, you will need an existing (WORKING) remote, and the new remote(s) you want to program.
Press (LOCK) button 5 times at 2 second Intervals to resynchronize transmitter, Attempt to function transmitter, If working as designed discontinue programming.
Turn ignition to run position, (Allow Ignition chimes to stop).
Using any original (working )transmitter, press the [UNLOCK] button for 4 to 10 seconds.
Within the specified 4 to l0 seconds, continue pressing the [UNLOCK] button and press the [PANIC] button for 1 second and release both buttons. A chime will sound to indicate that the transmitter programming mode has been entered (allow 3 seconds for chime to sound).
Press [LOCK] and [UNLOCK] buttons simultaneously for 1 second and release.
Press and release any button an the same transmitter and a chime will sound after successfully programming the transmitter.
Repeat steps 5 through 6 to program additional transmitters.
Turn ignition to OFF position. Transmitter programming mode will discontinue after 60 seconds. (All transmitter programming must be completed within time specified).
NOTE
If equipped with VTSS, the system must be disarmed and/or unlocked to enter program mode.

Warning:
Simultaneous programming of multiple vehicles should be avoided as any transmitter activated within 30 meters (100 feet) can get programmed and may result in cross-vehicle programming.

Time for a trip to the dealer

They will have to flash the security module with the new key fob specs. The reprogram only works if you have both factory keys and want to program a third...

I would recommend that the OP tries what TexasRock posted. As I stated before, I was given only one key fob when I purchased my CRD and was able to program a second one, without a trip to the dealer... I just can't remember exactly how the locksmith and I did it.

You may need two keys to program for keyless entry, but you can program a transponder chip to not shut off your KJ after the 2 sec. grace period with only one original.

Gotta make sure that the transponder key has the correct chip to speak with your specific year of vehicle.I'm pretty sure the older transponder keys will not work with the newer keyfob transponder keys for the newer ones,I may be wrong though.

Any luck? I've only had one key since I got my KJ and I need a 2nd for the remote start system I recently got. Don't really want to pay dealership prices for a key, though.

I went through that same thing with outback key fobs when I bought that car I only got one then I got another off ebay. someone on a forum gave me the directions and it was such silly stuff I remember you had to do to program it. like put the key in turn it on and off 15 times in 45 seconds then when the horn honked open the drivers door and shut it quickly then hit the lock key on one of the fobs when the horn honks open the door and shut it again press lock on the next fob and repeat untill your done then start the car and turn it of to exit that mode. my neighbor caught me doing it and thought it was real funny. asked me what kind of game I was playing with the car and who won.

How do you get an auto start I seen it in the parts list and service manual, can you order it from the dealer and install it yourself?

The original poster does not mention his year and it may possibly make a difference. As for a lock smith being able to program another key when you only have one. Some lock smiths have the equiptment to do this and some don't.
For my 06 the instructions in the owners manual for programming another requires the owner to have two working keys. If not a trip to the dealer, or a well equipted lock smith, is in order. I got a blank non remote key with a chip off ebay and programmed it myself after having it cut. So the moral here is get a third key before you loose one  If not you'll be at the dealer's mercy. I recently got a ignition lock cylinder for my XJ from my local dealer for twice what an online vendor says is the retail cost :banghead: So they are paying the rent any way they can :dizzy:

I think the key was ~$70 and the programming ~$50

my wife managed to lose hers the day before we were going to Moab
(found it a year later in a different purse)

and 05's had to have 2 active keys to program another
