I bought a 2006 Liberty CRD a week ago.
There is a small plastic square box about 1" square attached to the bottom of the dash below the steering column. there are 2 wires coming out of it and going behind the dash board.
See the attached picture. (I can't figure out how to attach pictures)
Can anyone tell me what it is?

Thanks in advance.
Dave

I had one of those when I bought my used CRD. It had a plug that could be removed to prevent the car from starting. Some kind of security thing. I removed this whole unit and spliced the two wires together to bypass it.

I was going to say it looks kinda like a glass-break sensor. What's on the inboard side: a socket or another smooth surface?

It is connected to a box that says electronic security module on it also the little box on the dash has a blue light inside it that flashes when it is unplugged and reconnected. Can't find any brand name.

That looks somewhat similar to a little one that came installed on my 05 CRD, except it has a little red flashing light. On mine there is also a little black disc on each key fob too - if the disc isn't within a close enough proximity to the little black box, it won't start. I will be removing it.

Likely it's a microphone to monitor your conversations. Required on all new vehicles by the department of Homeland Security :-)r

Seriously if you can read the part number off of the label on the bottom of it go to your nearest dealership and have them look it up for you. From the previous posts it does sound like part of the security system but I'm still curious what it's purpose is.

If there is an added piece on the keyfob, it could be the anti-start device from the used car dealer installed to protect from theft. We used to install the same unit on vehicles when I worked at a Ford place about 12 yrs ago. we would sell it as an add on for the customer to buy, or would bypass it and put it in another vehicle if the customer did not pay for it.
