I've got a rhythmic metallic rubbing noise coming from the front end that is vehicle speed dependent. If it's cold out it doesn't start until I've driven for a few miles. The sound diminishes during right turns at speed (weight shift left) and increases during left turns at speed (weight shift right), leading me to think that it might be the front right hub bearing.

Does this sound about right to you guys?

Ive got a similar sound right now. Only get it after driving on the hw for awhile. Sometimes it seems to go away when turning but its hard to tell with my tires. Mines more of a 'whomp, whomp, whomp' varying with speed. Took the front end apart this weekend and couldnt find a thing wrong.

Yes, still running the stock CVs, 99500 miles. I thought about it possibly being the CVs, but none of the boots are torn so I'm pretty sure the grease hasn't leaked out, though I guess after nearly 100k miles they might have worn out anyway.

Any suggestions for telling if it's a CV short of replacing them and seeing if the noise goes away? I tried jacking the front end up and turning the wheels by hand, but I can't get them spinning fast enough to make the sound.

Some more info about the noise that may help. You really can't hear it coming from outside with the windows rolled down, it's pretty much entirely transmitted through the body. Oh, and I can feel a minor vibration in time with the rubbing sound through the pedals.

Boots don't have to be torn to be bad, mine were rusted together, (CV and intermediate shaft) and the boots still great. Had to put the CV in a vice and beat the intermediate shaft off it was so rusted. It had started as a sort of whomp-whomp sound esp. heard going between buildings and such . heard enough other ones I knew what was starting to go

Hmm, I'm not sure that's it then. As I mentioned before you pretty much only hear it on the inside and I don't hear a sound reflection of it when going between buildings, next to walls, etc.

Check the rear boot on the front driveshaft as well. If the boot goes, which it does , then that could be the sound you hear coming up through as well , dirt eyc. gets back in the joint and again rust!

i replaced my front hub/wheel bearings because i felt the excessive side to side wobble/play in them. but my tires are so loud, i would in no way, be able to hear if they were humming or going bad :P

My front driveshaft rear CV was toast. I pulled the shaft last week and posted pictures. There was actually a hole blown in the front of the CV housing.

I thought that would be the cause and cure of my noise as well, but unfortunately not.
