I've got an 04 limited and have a line on a junked 2003 Renegade with all the Skids are they a direct bolt on? Do I need to get all the fasteners from my friend or are the skids held on by existing fasteners? I can get the whole set for 150$

Worst case you have to drill an extra hole or two - unless it includes Nutserts - you'll probably have to anyway. Although
jparts front $70, tranny $45, transfer case $45, fuel tank $105 - so all new $260 and I think the tranny skid wasn't introduced until 05 (not sure about that)

Skids from an 03 will fit an 04. However, if your KJ didn't come with the skids you probably (like me) only have the threads for the engine skid. The back part of the transmission skid will require drilling the rear frame cross rail. You will have threads for the gas tank skid. It uses the same holes/threads as the hitch and any gas tank skid from a 02 – 07 will fit.

the gas tank skid has the threads in there, the rest you may have to use nut certs. They come with the skids when you buy them seperate. Just get a few at the store and make it happen!!

I WAS a big proponent of the "nutzert" (or riv-nut as the inventor and aerospace industry calls them:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rivnut)....until last night. After stripping out the hex body on TWO of them even being really careful to hold the flange tight up against the x-member, I say forget them unless they're already there. If your holes line up with the factory hex holes (and they should if it's the right skid), put an appropriately-sized through-hole in the top of the crossmember and use a longer bolt with a washer/locknut/nut. It'll be stronger and more serviceable in the long run. The only tricky part is getting the drill lined up straight in the existing hole when you start to drill through the other side. I recommend starting a depression with a small punch so the drill bit doesn't drift on you.

Dan

The engine skid is M10x1.5. 40 mm long should be plenty (about an inch and a half).

It is the gas tank skid that is M12x1.75. Others are all M10x1.5, I believe.

Yes, the nutserts can be a PITA.
