As far as the price of my bumper I really can't say with any certainty. I told my customer it would probably be around $1100-1200 with full options, but might go as high as $1500. If it has to go higher I'm going to eat the difference on his. It is really too early to tell.

Out of curiosity.. what would be the point of making an aluminum AND steel bumper? Looks?

A full aluminum bumper makes sense to me.
A full steel bumper also makes sense to me.
A steel bumper with light gauge stainless welded to it where you would want aluminum would make sense... to me.... assuming the aluminum is for show?

Boiler... how much lighter would an equivalent aluminum bumper made out of AL be compared to steel?

Awesome thread BTW :)

equivalent strength or thickness? Equivalent parts size-wise, and you'd end up with a bumper that weight about exactly 30% that of steel. After up sizing for lower tensile strength (to achieve equivalent stress handling ability), my aluminum designs weigh about 40 to 50% of what an equivalent steel design would weigh.

As far as a combination of materials, some people are under the impression that you'd want a steel main structure for strength. When in actuality you just have to design the aluminum structure appropriately for the job and you can just do one material or the other.

Oh and stainless = $ Want a $6000 bumper? I'll make one for you out of stainless  serious!

LOL.. I wasn't talking about making a full stainless bumper... just putting a #16 Ga skin on it to give it that shiny look everyone seems to like...

I can only imagine what a good graze on a rock could do to gall the finish on some 3/16" stainless... :?

Actually Boiler, I would love to meet you and talk shop one day.
My main job is control retrofits, but we just acquired a sheetmetal fab shop (one which I worked for in my earlier 20's), and I've been designing splash guards for CNC machines since I was about 17... All my design is 2D... started with machine guards and then I got into Kitchen equipment... loads of stainless, but not too much with aluminum.

Sorry to hijack. Great thread :)

Interesting! Sounds familiar. Tony, the guy that does my welding, started working at a place in Muncie called Brand Metal and Restaraunt Equipment. We still mooch a machine there now and again.
