The pinch weld on the rear bumper / cross member hangs down below the frame mounts for the gas tank skid, tow hitch, and bumper by about 3/4". I was toying with the idea of making vertical cuts in it and hammering over two 3" sections to clear room for bumper supports. Yes, I could go around it, but it would drive up the complication in the construction, as well as making the mounts more visible with bumper installed. Basically the bumper mounts would hang down an additional 1" or more (for clearance to the pinch) and would require a chunkier rear bumper to hide them, if I decided they needed hiding.

I'm wondering how resistant to cutting these pinch welds and hammering them over people would be. Any immediate concerns? You'd have to gob some paint on them of course, but the actual bumper/crossmember that you're affecting would be basically taken out of service as far as being a crash member, so structural weakening, if any, shouldn't be too much of a concern. I would do my own this way.

NO! Too much pulling and use toward the rear of the KJ to be cutting pinch weld.... Well Some of us NON CRAZY people in Ohio wouldn't do it... :2cents:

There has to be another way...

There are other ways.

Help me understand how you're pulling on the crossmember or how pulling on the towhook or tow hitch would be affected by the crossmember.

I'm just saying I wouldn't buy a bumper if you had cut part of the pinchweld/frame.

I don't like cutting the anypart of the unibody. It has to weaken the entire struture (Some how) I don't care what you say... :goink:

This should be good

After seeing what some people do just trying to install a lift I can only dream of how some would cut the pinch welds. :ROTFL:

You are also okay with a bumper that looks like a football helmet...

Sketch something up so we have a better idea of why and where. Not your bumper plans but just frame/pinch weld/ support system

Right now we can only assume what you are thinking ( yes scary  ) and it maybe (?) something much different than what we are. After just going out and laying under mine for the last 20 minutes I can't see where it would really be needed unless it is side supports or something?? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? In that case there are a lot of other ways to do it.

knowing where your head is will make it easier for everyone to vote yes or no

Just cut it and reweld it if you think it needs to be.

Pretty sue everyone w/ a RL rear had to cut it, I know I did on both my KJ's. No worries here. W/ the rigidity that a strong bumper would add to the rear of the UB it can only help the overall strength.

We have to drill multiple holes in the pinch weld and frame for our rock rails and pound down the pinch weld in the front wheel well so I don't see any problem with trimming the rear pinch weld a little.

If the bumper looks good.... and what you're cutting doesn't effect anything..... I'd let Tommudd do it.....

Otherwise...... PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFT! :goink:

Well I took a boatload of measurements today and plan on modeling the rear of the KJ over the next couple days. When I get the crossmember / uniframe done I'll show you what I mean.
