NCCER??

Anyone here NCCER certified??

Here within the next month I will be finishing up my level 1 NCCER certification for welding.
This will GREATLY help me get a welding job. So I will be making 3x as much money as I am now at walmart.
That means more jeep mods!! I might even undertake an SFA.

So if there anyone around here thats NCCER certified??
What level are you up to??

Hey Bud,

My company, Turner Industries, accepts NCCER cerifications in lieu of in-house craft tests. However, if you're welding under CWI QC guidelines, you still have to take an X-Ray weld test and all welds made in the field are subjected to both visual and X-Ray inspection. Have you ever done an X-Ray test on TIG pipe welds?

Never done an x-ray test, never done tig either.
I just graduated highschool last year so I'm still trying to get into the welding industry. ha

Are there any shipyards or refinery/ chemical plants near you? A good place to start would be structural or plate welding, and both industries have a lot of that. You can do stick for your job while you practice TIG'ing on your own, and maybe get to do some TIG'ing on the job in certain situations.

The only shipyard around here requires minimum of 5 years military welding experience. Thats due to they are a navy contracted company working on the ships stationed here.

Don't know about any refinery or chemical plants around here though.

If machines weren't so expensive I'd buy one so I can practice on my own time.

So have you worked as a welder yet, or are you earning your certifications to try to get a job welding? Many training centers, like ABC here that conducts NCCER training and testing, offer job placement assistance, since they are non-profits funded by area industry.

I have not had a welding job yet. Well I did some welding over summer for my old welding instructor ad got paid for it.
Other than that all the welding I have done was in school.
My welding instructor called me this morning and asked me if I wanted to finish getting certified since I didn't get it done while I was actually still in school.

I'm doing this to help me get a job in welding. If I knew about a place here that did the training and such and helped me get a job I would have done it in a heartbeat.
Does that place do it for free or does it cost?

It's not free, you pay for the classes that lead up to the certification. But the company you work for sponsors you in the school, so the cost is not high - like $200 a semester. You can do it on your own, but it costs much more that way.

Look around for fab shops that may be looking for an apprentice. Be flexible on your schedule and income expectations, and it will pay off when you become an experienced welder. A good way to identify fab shops is to determine what the predominant business is in your area, and look for the places that support that industry - i.e., in petrochem here on the Mississippi River in LA, there are a lot of pipe fabrication and valve specialist shops. Many of our jam-up welders came from this background, progressing into live hot-work in a plant welding pipe spools into existing lines, etc.

Well I'm going to be getting it for free with my old instructor. The main business around here is ship welding since Jacksonville is a big port city so I will probably have to look around for a shipyard that will hire people will little experience.
Or theres a local off-road shop not too far away that does fab work and such, I could try to get a job there.

You could become the next Rock Lizard fabrications. You'd have to change the name, though, I'm sure they're keeping rights to that. Maybe a cross of Rock Lizard and Air Bud? Like, Rock Bud? Air Lizard? Something like that. . .

You could join the Navy as a Seabee and do all types of welding working on apprentice and then when you got out in 4-6 yrs, you would get hired on with huge pay at those shipyards.

Why wouldn't the military be for you?

If you're going to go in, Navy or Air Force is the way to go. Especially Navy.

The military is for everyone... they just don't know it yet. :ROTFL:

I have a buddy in the Marines that switched over to welding... He's in assganistan right now, but all he does is weld parts back on that the Motor T guys rip off being stupid... Says it isn't that bad... other than the not being home thing... :ALONE:

It's not really like that... It's a lot more chill now days... Not so much on the Big Mouth thing, but you learn quick...well...most do...

Unlike most people now a days I have an opinion and a voice, and I use both of them regularly. lol

But I think if I can't find a welding job after a year or two then I might go ahead and enlist in the navy and go to the seabees for a few years.

Believe me, no matter which branch you choose, they would take care of your opinions pretty quick. The whole point of basic training is to break down your identity as an individual and mold you into being a part of the team. Basic would be rough on you, but you would come out a better man for it for sure.

Also if you became a Seabee, there is a good chance you would be stationed in Gulfport, MS - not too far from home. And you may get to ride on a hovercraft - that is the main amphibious assault training base for the Navy. Those things are SWEET!

Can't hurt to go see a recruiter and get some solid info.

Trust me, I'm a team player. I just don't take well to being yelled at over stupid stuff and I will let them know. lol

One of my bosses at walmart already doesn't like me because I pointed out how the time they allow us to work our freight is a buch of BS. He got kinda angry. lol

But I've already ridden on a hovercraft.

During an airshow on the beach a few years ago they had a couple hovercrafts and let some military and their families go on a ride. Luckily my dad knew about it in advance and we got in line early. It was awesome!!!!!!
