I am comparing results post and pre GDE WITH the tires for consistency. I have been doing MPG studies for years on multiple vehicles so I'm pretty good with calculating MPG numbers. My testing has taught me a lot. I've done a lot of work in this area recently.

Keeping everything else constant, the post-GDE numbers are not improving. 215 miles...well under a half-tank now.

BUT...as suggested I am about to try some different brands of diesel and see what happens. Let me get some more data and I'll report back. I'm wondering how much power service in the fuel could be affecting things too. I also have to GPS my odo. I know the speedo is spot on. I'll have results soon.

So did your milage DROP with the addition of the GDE? We Have been thinking of getting the GDE but my wife gets 24.5 in town without it. I sure don't want to see a drop in milage.

Don't quote me on this (but I think it's on their site), they have a money back/reflash guarantee on the tune. If you're not happy with it, they'll reflash your ECU back to the old code and refund your bucks. I don't know that I've heard of anyone taking them up on it :) I would be genuinely surprised to see a decrease in mileage with the tune (all other factors remaining constant).

This is the first instance in which I have heard of mileage actually dropping... Most people see a rather significant increase. If she gets 24.5 in town, right now, I'd imagine you'd see something like 27-28mpg after the tune.

I was getting 17-18 mpg in city driving (short trips with lots of stops). With GDE, my first tank was a solid 21mph in same city driving scenarios but with one difference, the go pedal was mashed to the firewall at every stoplight.

My mileage has stayed the same or dropped a little. BUT...I still need to collect more data to be sure that I know why. I cannot say it was the tune that caused it. Other factors (diesel fuel, anti-gel additive, etc.) may be to blame.

Power...somewhat noticeable difference, but not as much as I expected. Definitely did not feel like 65 lb./ft. more...that's for sure.

I do like the check engine light being off though.

I have found the CRD to be a fussy beast when it comes to fuel, with summer diesel I can easily get 33-35 MPG. but with winter fuel I see a major drop to 25MPG. If I get a crappy tank of diesel the figures are even worse. I drive out of my way to fill up at busy truck stops where a consistent fresh fuel can be had. Searching for good fuel? follow the trucks.

Actually, according to a thread (which I can't find, at the moment) over on the TDI forums, truck stop diesel is rock gut stuff that you don't want to add to your vehicle. IIRC, Chevron and BP have the highest cetane, best quality dino fuel.

Every mile per gallon means big $$$ to a truck driver. That is why I suspect that truck stops have the best diesel fuel. Not to mention they sell more of it...so it's always "fresh". I plan to fill up at the local Flying J this afternoon...then I'll do more testing.

So far, this tank is at 310 miles and I'm falling below 1/4 tank mark now. Will likely end up around 18-20 MPG or so when I do the hand calculation (EVIC shows 22 MPG currently).

I hate to diss the TDIclub guys, cuz I don't know who posted that... But that is the biggest crock of crap.

Gasoline and diesel come from your local terminals, where all the trucks fill from one of 3 BIG holding silos. Diesel, Reg Unl, Super Unl. Mid-Unl is made in the truck or the station by 50% mixing reg and super. The additives (if any) in gasoline are added at the truck or at the delivery station (most likely at the truck point, since the filling quantities are known) HOWEVER, diesel is basically done. IF there was a true difference in diesel quality that was not due to additives, there would be multiple diesel tanks, just like there are multiple gasoline tanks.

Dye for off-road is added at either the truck or the delivery station, ditto for marine diesel that may or may not have anti-algae added. (I'm not sure on that one, don't own a Diesel boat)

You want the truckstop diesel b/c that is always the FRESHEST. Smaller stations, where the diesel doesn't get refilled much... You probably would NEVER want what is in that tank near your engine... Think about all the daily condensation cycles that tank is going through...

Now... There may be a couple of stations that are legitimately adding PowerService or another cetane booster. I don't know for certain. BUT, I do know that I have VERY RARELY seen a station with a cetane rating on the pump, OR a station claiming "supreme diesel" b/c to my understanding of the law... If they are claiming supreme diesel... It has to be DIFFERENT than the regular crap in the USA.

At least in the Shell stations in Florida (that many are claiming supreme diesel) that is NOT true. Their fuel is probably different from regular diesel... WORSE. My CRD and my Jetta both had never run so bad as on that crap. Those stations were not serving trucks tho - So low volume. Who knows what I really got from them.

Follow the truckers. Get the fresh fuel, in the USA, it's all the same rot-gut unless it is biodiesel OR Low Sulfur. Our CRDs LOVE Low Sulfur, lots more energy!

I agree with Geordi, diesel fuel is diesel fuel.

x2 with RJM...

I also had a major decrease in MPG since late fall, mostly due to winter fuel plus all adverse effects of lower temps on the different parts of the Libby (thicker oil, heat, winter tires, VH, etc.)

I have to digagree with Geordi :|
Early last fall I spent about an hour talking with a delivery truck driver for a local fuel distributor. A large computer site was running on diesel power while their main power feed was being replaced after a lightning strike. He showed me a 2 or 3 gallon jug of addative that he added ounces of to his load to provide lubricity and cetain to each load of fuel. The stuff in the jug smelled like power service but I'm sure was much more concentrated. That load, being early fall, was winterized with 30% kerosene at the source. I don't remember where the red dye was added for off road. The responsibility for adding lubricity to ULSD has been put squarley on the shoulders of the delivery person. That is the bottom guy on the totem pole and is a prime example of passing the buck
I've been driving diesel powered cars since 1978 and have been tracking fuel mileage too  I've found that different areas of the country consistanty have good or bad diesel fuel. Central Ohio is and has been a bad place to buy fuel. As someone has pointed out it all comes from the same pipe. This was explained to me by a person trying to sell B100 to the different distributors in the area. Between types of fuel, say regular unleaded and D2, there's a certain amount of fuel that that is not fit to sell and goes to a company that seperates them. The less that goes to them the more that is sold to us at a profit:dizzy: We have a larged tank farm located along the pipeline where at one time all the different oil companies had their own tanks and this BIO dealer is right in the middle of them. So at each different facility in a small hut where the valves are located watching various instruments monitoring what is flowing down the pipeline. When the product is considered 90% pure they open the valves and fill that vendor's tanks. So it matters a lot who the person that is opening the valves works for and or who is watching him as far as what goes in our tanks.
Passing by the various tanks at any one time you'll see most all brands displayed on the trucks getting fuel at the same place. You'll also see a lot of unbranded trucks too. The tanks themselves have lost the familiar logos too.
The one hold out is the large BP tank farms. You'll also see trucks of various brands there too. Before retirement I was at the BP facility often repairing computers keeping tract of what truck got what and when. The manager there told me there was no premimum diesel in Columbus, Ohio :banghead: So any station claiming otherwise is getting their fuel from outside the area or is misadvertising their product :furious:
I stated above different areas have better or worse fuel. Over the years I have made many trips to the Tampa area of Florida from Columbus Ohio and back. Various cars over the years have had different ranges due to tank and car size. I have found that Kentucky's fuel is no better then what's in Columbus  But as I got into Gerogia my fuel mileage started going up. Keep in mind when you fill up you still have some of the previous fuel left. On the trip back when most of the fuel came from Florida and Georgia is when I've gotten my best figures. On a 99.5 Jetta tdi I got 70 and 72 MPG two tanks in a row :-)r Anyone who tracks their fuel usage knows that two tanks in a row is not caused by over/under filling :? For the past two years my highway mileage has been towing a 3500# camper to the Outter Banks of NC with my CRD. That trip is 700 miles each and I get the best mileage from fuel bought in Virginia. I found a Flying-J truck stop that had "Minimum 45 Cetane" posted on their diesel tanks. We made that trip 2 times last summer and stopped at that station both coming and going. The first trip was before GDE and the second was after. Same roades, same temperatures, same driver and with the GDE tune my mileage is about 3 more and one tank I got 20 MPG  Anyone who tows a trailer knows this is not a small feat and I don't drive to get good fuel mileage either :jester:

Over on the tdi club aorund 2000 I was one of the first to report very high fuel mileage. Most initially ignored me but soon others started getting similiar results. There's a poster there who gets his fuel samples analized and was sick of what's in the pumps in the Columbus area and finally put in his own tanks and got a load of what was supposed to be BP's "Diesel Supreme". When he got his results back he was sick! BP picked up the fuel and refunded his $$. Not only was it low quality it had large amounts of water and dirt in it. This guy's main thing in life was to get good fuel for his TDI and he was not successfull.

I believe the fuel for this area of the country comes from a refinery in the Toledo Ohio area. My son has my last tdi and is often in that area and fills his car there. With that fuel his mileage is in the 60's  The further from the refinery the more the fuel getts diluted in the pipeline :dizzy:

This subject has been brought up here many times and the conclusion is the same. Also basing any conclusions on what your fuel guage says is pure guess work. Fuel mileage must be tracked long term over many tankfulls. With my GDE tune, winterized fuel, 12" of snow, full time 4x4, short slow trips I'm averaging 20 mpg for three tankfulls. that's 3 mpg better then last winter and we didn't have near the snow :BINGO:

So it matters a great deal where you are as to what fuel quality you get

I do agree with the above post. I regularly cross the border into North Dakota, every time I filled up there (no matter the station) my fuel economy went further south than I did and the jeep ran like crap.
The first few times I thought there was a problem with the engine, but the above would explain my findings.

I know that winter fuel is lighter and has less energy in it, but does anyone else see a 8-10mpg drop between the two? Over the past 3 winter I have been blending summer and winter diesel, but this winter has been nasty and I don't want a mess on my hands.

On my gas trucks I always saw a 2 MPG hit on Winter fuel. With the diesel, I think it's more significant. The more MPG a vehicle gets, the more sensitive it is to changes and the percent loss on Winter fuel (or other factors) will be greater. 8-10 MPG seems WAY wrong though.

My experince over the 5 winters I have had the car is about 2-3 mpg down in winter. Some of the drop is due to the blend, but some is due to cold temps not allowing engine to get to full operating temp. In mild-hot weather my temp gauge shows 11:58. In cold temps it is down around 11:55 no matter how far/long I drive.

Mine too, and I have been toying with making a grille blanket as a test to see if that helps get the engine warmed up any further. Without towing to load the engine... I don't think it is working hard enough to get to its most efficient temps. And my MPG hasn't been that great this winter either, down around 20 or so. Part of that should be b/c of the air sensor... But that is still a huge drop.
