you know - one of the worst 'burned brake' smells I've smelled - was a Prius coming down Rocky Mountain Nation Park's high road - we were close to the bottom when they passed - you could smell it 30-40 ft away.

what makes them burn the brakes more than any other car? or was it simply the driver?

i rarely ever use my brakes, just made a trip to and from ohio through the mountains and the wear on my brakes probably amounted to a few trips to the grocery store here lol

Lots of people come to colorado, from places like texas, florida, north carolina, ohio, and think they know how to drive. Then they drive downhill in the rocky mountains and overheat their brakes.

What flatelanders(and too many coloradans) don't know is to downshift, use your engine brake, and then use your brakes to augment that.

It got so bad on pikes peak that they now check your brakes going downhill with a laser thermometer to make sure your not overheating them. They started doing that after a couple of Nuns from kansas flew off the side of the mountain, witnesses said they heard "strange noises" coming from the car as it plummeted over the edge.

Gotta wonder what those nuns were screaming as they went over.

yeah i'd imagine that much of the rockys that you're talking about resembles some of our 'run-away truck' zones which the engine brake on the libertys will keep you under 60

unless it's covered in ice and then you're on your own to do what ya gotta do to keep from becoming a tractor sandwich :lol:

i didn't know if there was something different with the prius that made them burn brakes bad or what

Ya I just downshift and let 3rd gear(or 4th or second or 1st) slow me down. Or for a slight hill I turn OD off.

didn't have any problems with my auto, no heating, no problem with engine braking, i'd just click the button out of OD and 50-60 it would stay on downhills, actually had to give it some gas on the down hills a few times

part of the way home, wind was blowin towards me hard enough that it got to where i couldn't really tell if i was going up or down, tried to hit 70 on the way down one hill and just about couldn't and the rain wasn't even hitting the windshield, same wind in the cross wind valleys about put me in the guard rail

was actually a kinda fun drive home, except for the 10 some miles where i didn't think any of us were going to make it through the run aways

The Prius must have had its' batteries fully charged making the regenitive braking system not work due to having no place for the electrical current go. Mounting big resistors on the roof may help :ROTFL:

In my opinion Hybrids have their place in highly congested cities like Manhattan, Washington DC, Down Town Chicago, and maybe parts of LA, and sometimes Toronto. As we know the parts of these highly congested cities are in non mountainous areas. For the rest of the North American Continent, Hybrids are dumb :!:
