I live in Illinois, why the hell is an earthquake waking me up?

Magnitude 4.3 on the Richter Scale

I happen to be awake at the time and being 5 floors up it felt like an eternity
felt it for about 3 seconds or so....

Yeah, my husband said that Facebook went wild this morning about it. He told me about it when we were leaving for work. Guess it initially was classed around a 4-point-something?

We didn't feel anything downstate. Hope everyone's foundations are intact!

The four largest quakes ever recorded in America are from the New Madrid fault which runs along the southern border of IL. One quake was so violent it briefly changed the natural flow of the Mississippi River (water normally flowing south changed course to northward and it shifted area's of the river banks along the IL, MO, KY borders. The river in that area briefly split it two.

IIRC, the quake shook something like 18 states from the midwest, to the mid Atlantic to the Gulf states. Over 1 million square miles.

Mind you, the quake we felt the other night is not apart of the New Madrid fault line.

is the new madrid fault kind of like the faults we have in NC where the rocks are so old and kind of welded together? they've said if the fault we have that runs through the apps ever broke free again it would be quite nasty due to the stress it's built up over the who knows how many years

we do have a fault down around charlotte that burps every now and then though

Our earthquake was located in the Sandwich Fault Zone. The 2004 LaSalle County earthquake was also located in this fault zone.
