ok ok the cv joints did not fail , but the inner axle and inner cv splines did....

the saga .... just bought the kj today , knew about the noise up front , previous owner threw in a new cv shaft with the jeep .

drove it home 2+ hrs , a little noise/ vibration when we departed , before we got home i had to stop and check the front end for fear of something coming apart... :banghead: and the wife is pissed.

anyways i get home look it over , throw it in 4wd low to plow thru a foot or so of snow to get to the pole barn ,, then the front end made an awful grinding noise ,, and the front tires would try to spin but then stop.... ah crap :ALONE: i'm in the dog house now..

so i get it in on the car lift , pull the right side apart

and find this..

the shaft was super sloppy in the cv housing , couldn't spin it by hand but sure this is where it was grinding by all the metal shavings that fell out. well since i don't have any inner shafts and it's late saturday night i did what anyone with a welder and no other options would have done

i welded that B$tch up :seuss:

slapped in back together and took it for a spin ,,, 4wd works and almost vibration free

don't worry this is just temporary till i get a new inner shaft

darn 67K... makes me worried I am driving a time bomb...

Nice fix.

I don't know enough to say if this is a good or bad idea, but I will tip my hat to you for style :)

I likely would have done the same thing
Mark

P.s. where are you in relation to Chardon?

Should of been one solid piece from the factory anyway. Amazes me that you got everything centered up and that it doesnt vibrate like crazy.

it's not my first cheap fix ,,, there was a little more to it then just welding it . i've built my own driveshafts without needing balanced before also :JEEPIN:

and yes it should have been one piece or at least been sealed with locktight

Well, guess I was off a tad on my diag of the vib/noise but I was close. Wierd that 4wd worked fine doing up the driveway thursday without any crazy noises, and on the rd in 4hi the vib was near gone I could have sworn it was the cv joint closest to the wheel.
As I told you already, I am deeply sorry I wasnt able to tell you about this issue.

Nice "temp fix" too bad you probably ruined your chances of turning that one in for a core when you get the new one.

Great temp fix but not a safe/good long term fix.The CV cups are hardened steel,if you weld on hardened steel it becomes very weak and brittle, doesn't do any good on the inner axle either since they are heat tempered also.

no core needed. I already furnished the cv shaft, I got a core from yellowcoyote to turn in, and gave jeepdaddy the new shaft when he picked it up.
