Is it the internal seal or is it the lines that connect to it?? The reason I ask is the internal seals is between the two impellers on the shaft and not replaced without a rebuild which I heard is not recommended for our turbo.

If you can tell us which part are being replaced, if any, then we can tell you how the dealer is jerking you around.

the inner seal.it has been replaced twice already ..i have the same symptoms as both other times with the excess smoke and lack of power ,not to mention the oil running right down the passenger side rite from the turbo. I'm suppose to take it back in later this week so they can give me their diagnosis. :dizzy:

I think I can read their diagnosis from here... Just a sec, let me get the binoculars...

"Turbo leaking oil, warranty leaking money into dealership's coffers. Suggested repair: replace shiny exterior on turbo by using can of spray cleaner, dealership pockets $$$$$$ from warranty. Repeat on each re-visit."

They are jerking you around, and certainly wasting SOMEONE'S money by claiming this is being fixed. The turbo's tolerances are so tight that the internals CANNOT be rebuilt without tearing the thing completely apart... Which is beyond what any dealer would do, besides being a BAD idea for our turbos. They SHOULD be replacing the turbo completely... But are not for some reason. Are they claiming to have "rebuilt" or "replaced" the turbo on the repair sheets?

Just for giggles, before the next time you take it in to them, I would pull off the heat shield and put a dot onto the casing with a sharpie. Then you will have a mark to KNOW if they actually pulled the thing and replaced it.

Lack of power could be a blown hose, VERY common on these things, and hard to diagnose without actually poking at them - no codes usually, just really bad performance.

Good luck. If there is another dealer in your area, I might give them a try. Something is decidedly fishy with the one you have been going to.

Thanks there Geordi.. I have had that very feeling since day one but when i got my crd there was no certified crd mechanics around except this dealer.without having to travel 50 miles. my problem now is that i am at 71200 and only had a 70000 mile extended waranty.. can you say pissed.. :furious: the last time it was in for this i made a big deal about not replacing it and i was told they installed some new style seal that would fix this problem,
YA RITE... my liberty is one of 3 diesel's that i own and have never had any trouble with a turbo before on any of them..I know about there crd's being run in and about Europe and it seems like the ones here have all kinds of quirks.. But four times for the same thing and the first thing to come out of the service reps mouth the other day while on the phone was" some sh*t about not having any say about my expired service agreement...I will be lucky if i don't choke her before this is all over.

Had this problem with mine (so said the dealer) at about 67000 miles. Although it was not a continuous issue. Dealer replaced my turbo and hoses. $100.00 copay. I have 90,000 miles on the jeep now and have had no issues so for.

Tell them they did not fix it right, and you want the new turbo they should have put on 8000 miles ago. Also tell the you would like to see the procedure they followed in the FSM, because no one rebuilds turbos in a repair shop especially a dealer. I think they fed you a good line of B$. Also threaten to take them to small claims court if they don't give you the new turbo that you were entitled to 8000 miles ago.

FLMAN.. I questioned that myself and was told that their jeep certified crd mechanic does their turbo rebuilds in house. in matter of fact i talked to him myself last time when it was in and he himself told me what had been done with the repair of the inner seal.

I know it doesn't help you with your problem, but if that guy can rebuild turbos, why is he working at a Jeep dealership? 'Nuff said.

I still say BS, there is no procedure to repair the turbo in the FSM. See excerpt from the FSM:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DESCRIPTION

CAUTION: The turbocharger is a performance part and must not be tampered with. The wastegate bracket is an integral part of the turbocharger. Tampering with the wastegate components can reduce durability by increasing cylinder pressure and thermal loading due to incorrect inlet and exhaust manifold pressure. Poor fuel economy and failure to meet regulatory emissions laws may result. Increasing the turbocharger boost WILL NOT increase engine power.

The turbocharger is an exhaust-driven supercharger which increases the pressure and density of the air entering the engine through the charge air cooler. With the increase of air entering the engine, more fuel can be injected into the cylinders, which creates more power during combustion.

The turbocharger assembly consists of four (5) major component systems

Turbine section
Compressor section
Bearing housing
Variable veins
Actuator
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is the part number on the invoice? Can you look up the part number here? http://www.moparonlineparts.com/

I know even with heavy trucks, they are not repairing these in house, they either get new or reman.

Replaced seal? Hmmmm, what seal. Most (if not all) of the diesel turbos I have seen don't have no stinkin' seal. The reason is because on a diesel, there is no vacuum! Only positive pressure so oil shouldn't be leaking out anyway.
Sounds like you got took.
Better yet, have him show you the seal AND the part number from the FSM on the turbo.

Wastegate bracket we do not have any wastegate on our engine let alone a bracket for one. And the turbo is not like a supercharger a supercharger is always belt driven not exaust driven. Remember the old VW Corrados they had a supercharger on them driven by a serpentine belt. I mean the 90 thru 92 corrados with the 4 cylinder engines not the 93 and 94 VR 6s. Enough said.

I had a leaky turbo too at 30K. The dealership I bought the Jeep from replaced it with a new one. I don't think I've read anything about a dealer tech "overhauling" one. Given that these things can spin at up to 200,000 RPMs and that their longevity is dependent on things being balanced and everything have the proper clearances, it would seem odd that Chrysler would allow this type of repair as a sanction warranty repair. I'd suspect they "replaced the seal" and charged Chrysler for a new turbo. Sorry for the grief dude...I'd lawyer up. I'd also consider getting a second opinion in writing, combining with a nicely worded letter intended for the Better Business Bureau, online rating sites, and any other entity anyone can think of that the dealership would potentially take serious. Of course many of us had have our difficulties with them and in general feel that many of them are crooked, and the questionable dealerships apparently don't care. It's a bit of a shame that Chrysler didn't choose this one for the axing. I have no problem with businesses doing well, but I have no pity for those who are outright shady.

Back in the old days, these nifty devices were apparently known as turbosuperchargers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turbocharger. Both devices perform the same function. How they are powered is different as well as some of the performance characteristics.

In a NORMAL situation, any repair should be covered under its own 12 month 12k mi warranty, regardless of the vehicle's warranty terms.

So it wouldn't matter that your CRD has just now crossed into the 70's... BUT, this dealer has proven themselves untrustworthy, so it doesn't surprise me that the first thing they would say now is that your vehicle is beyond 70k... So now YOU get to pony up for their continued misdeeds.

x2 on getting a lawyer involved in this, your turbo repair SHOULD BE COVERED 100% b/c it has YET to be properly fixed. Any dealer can print out a copy of your VIP report (the service history, ask for it by name: VIP Report) for you, with only the last 8 digits of your VIN. I would get a copy of this, it will show what Mopar *thinks* has been done to your truck, when we all know better that they aren't replacing squat.
