Hi:

Since bringing my 2010 liberty home , when parked in the garage you can smell a strong smell as if a brake is grabbing. Called the dealer and they said just a new car smell. I have had several new cars so at 1000KM , around 4 weeks. Went to the dealer and requested that they look at it . they said it was some sort of plastic melted underneath and the smell would go away. Now at 6 weeks and 2000-km smell is still as strong.

I think and plastic bag would have melted by now and the smell is still strong after driving on wet roads. Its going back in on Friday. Just wondering if the tranny level is ok. is their a dip stick on the 3.7L.

Max

Theres plastic bags inside the fenders to help with Road Noise in the Cabin which might be whats burning but i dont what be burning it. And the Tranny has to be checked by the dealer with a certain tool

I posted a similar topic a few weeks ago. Ever since posting it the smell hasn't returned. Post whatever you find out so I can check mine too. Does yours happen every time you drive?

Yes evey time. I had it undercoated so they removed the spare then, but it made the smell before. Will take the spare down and look. I thought the exhaust was routed well away from the spare, but I will look closer. Thanks ...Max

does it smell like burning candle wax?

also, if they said it was some sort of melted plastic on it underneath, if it's ontop of the exhaust, depending which section of the exhaust, it can take a lonnnng time for that plastic to burn off, it may prove a better idea to find the melted plastic and get rid of it

I noticed the same thing in the same location shortly after I got my 09. Never got it looked at though because it only happened the one time. To my untrained nose it smelled like a hot tire, but I wouldn't put money on it and I couldn't see any reason for the tire to be hot.

The only thing I can see look like a thick label on the exhuast before the resonator. will look for something else.

Dealer ground down the exhuast pipe to remove plastic from pre delivery stickers. They think this will solve the smell problem .... Hope thats all it is.
