So I went to Just Brakes tonight to get some new brakes put on because I was getting a grinding sound from the drivers side rear. Plus, I knew that I needed new brakes. Anyways, the guys were showing me that my old brake pads weren't rubbing evenly. One half of each brake pad was rubbed more than the other. The rear brake pads were almost gone and the front pads looked still new. I was also under the impression from previous vehicle experience that the front brake pads wear down faster than the rears. Now my KK has 42,000 miles on them, which from reading other posts, is pretty good. The guys then told me that I needed to either replace or rebuild all 4 of my calipers and wanted to charge me $500 to rebuild them. I then asked them if I was able to do them myself since I consider myself a handy person. He told me that I could but that I wouldn't be able to find any parts because only they carry them and then he said he would not sell me the parts so that I could do it myself because he wouldn't make any money. No joke on that either. I am just curious as to if anyone else has had this problem. Also, is $500 really a good deal to have the existing calipers rebuilt or should I invest in some higher quality brakes? Or were these guys just blowing smoke up my stupid?

Smoke :juggle:

The rears seem to on;y last 25 to 40k on the KK's.

I think your calipers just need a good lubricating on the slide pins.....

Just my :2cents:

Plus I can get new rear calipers for $60 from napa... No need to rebuild them any way

It seems unlikely that your calipers really need to be rebuilt with that many miles. I think this is something a lot of shops do for fundraising. I took a car to a well known national brand muffler shop to get a new muffler and as a free service to me (ha ha) while I was waiting, they decided to waste my time by examining my brakes without asking me. They then told me I needed new calipers because the original ones wear out by the mileage I was at. So then I told them that they weren't the originals (even though they were) and all of a sudden, their estimate for how long calipers last got a lot shorter and they tried to convince me I was risking a safety problem if I didn't do it. They were blowing smoke, just trying to scare me into giving them a lot of money.

Is there a how to anywhere on how exactly to do this? They were saying that most likely the brakes were compressing but not decompressing. Is that what you are talking about?

That was your 1st mistake.

You can buy caliper rebuild kits from most auto parts stores, even the dealership, though it is cheaper to buy remaned calipers. It could be beneficial to get remaned calipers to get rid of the plastic pistons for ones with metal pistons which are less likely to stick.

Like already stated make sure the slide pins are lubed good, cuses most of the funny wear. All this can be done by a competent person. If you do replace the calipers mount the new ones before removing the brake line from the old ones and bleed ASAP,if air gets to the ABS pump it's time for a trip to the dealership.

Is there a "How To" anywhere on ensuring that I lube the slide pins correctly? I'm still trying to find that. Thanks!
