well saterday i was on my way to do some wheelin. well needless to say i never made it. the kj craped out. we were driveing down the road and the jeep started shaking like hell. :( well when i pulled over as soon as i let off the gas it dies. :? it would start back up but i had to pump the gas to get it going and when i would come to a stop sign i would have to shift into nutral and fether the gas and then drop it into drive do go. oh ya the check engien light never came on. well we worked on it for 3+ hours with no idea what was going on. :? it would drive ok but it felt undepowerd but would not idle on its own. when it would idle on it's own it shakes like hell and seams like its not getting a spark or something. well now its in the shop and they are still working on it now. as soon as i find out what is going on i will post what happend. if anyone has any ideas let me know.

oh ya it was cold saturday something like 17 or so but i put dry gas in it but no till i started haveing truble

I was thinking water in the gas the entire time. Could be a bad coil, bad spark plug. Should of pulled the codes even though it wasnt throwing any. My mothers toyota corolla had a bad plug and it would shake like crazy, also idled awful.

That was the exact same thing my old chevy blazer was doing when i decided to get rid of it for my KJ. Never found out what the cause was, the car was pretty beat down and wasn't worth pouring any more money into.

Sorry you didn't get to go wheelin' Saturday, good luck with the the repairs.

I had a 95 Ford Ranger that did the same thing. Most of the time it ran great, but every once in a while when I let off the gas, all my power equipment failed. Lights, radio, clock, windshield wipers all my power equipment, including power steering, went completely off just like the battery had been disconnected. It would shoot antifreeze out of about 5 different spots as well. No one could diagnose my problem, it never happened at the dealer, so I traded it in before I found out what was wrong with it.

well i just got off the phone with shop and was told that the truble was comeing from worn spark plugs. plug 2 and 4 were worn so bad that they were gaped out to 80+. so it looks like tomorrow i will be changing my plugs. it seams weid to me that i didn't have any truble and all of a sudden it just starts acting up. but he thinks that there was water in the gas and thats is what caused the plugs to act up and ruein them. also i have 70,000 miles on it and i don't think that its ever had a tune up. thanks for the help and i will keep you posted.

oh when it died i did not lose all power just stalled. i still had my lights and radio.

I had similar problems with my old protege I owned before I got the KJ. In my case it was a cracked head gasket. It would idle, but not at a constant RPM - it would go up and down by about 500 RPM, just in waves sort of. We decided to sell it because the work to get it fixed would cost us as much as we could get if we sold it, so we just pitched it.

water in the tank was my first thought also. Had a bad experience with water in the tank once also. Could have been bad gas from the station. Could have gotten water vapor in the distributor also.

Look at it this way: Your Jeep has magical clairvoyant powers. It knew something bad was going to happen on the trail-I mean REALLY bad. Unseen rolling boulder; falling redwood; cliff, airplane (you have better chances of an airplane falling on your car than you do of winning the lotto, so it could happen). The Jeep realized that the only way for it and you to survive was to break down. Hey, don't be mad; your KJ saved your LIFE! I think it deserves a 5 hour detail after it is done at the shop.

Hmm, Who was right? Wait, that was my post!!! 8)

The kj is known to be awful on spark plugs, some ppl change theres at 20k and they are already worn. I checked mine the other day and they were fine at 17k.

well this is what i have been told. i have to take it to another shop with a dignostics pc. the shop i had taken it to the first time, well they changed the plugs and told me that it ran fine for 3 to 5 min. and then started acting up agian. i have no clue what is going on. they think that it might be something to do with the fuel injecters.ether they are bad or there is a problom in the computer. i called the jeep dealer and they told me that it was the cheep plugs Autolite is what was put into it at the shop and not champions or bosh. but the new plugs foweld out and were wet when they took them out. well i will keep posting till i get it figured out. thanks for the help.

I had a similar problem as you. We had very bad rains here and I HAD to drive thru some deep puddles  When I got home, the truck would not restart and when it did I had to feather the gas to keep it running. It turned out to be a bad battery. I replaced it with an Optima and I have not had a problem since. You might want to have them check the battery.

well i just got off the phone with the shop and this is what i was told... the injecters are not shuting down when they are told to my the pcm and is just dumping fuel into the cylinders. wich is why the plugs are wet and fouling out. what they said they are going to do is pull and check all the injecters and clean them... :? sounds strange to me. well if that dosn't work they said that it may call for replaceing them well at least the two that aren't working right. what do you all think of this info??? feed back please

Never heard of that. I would think they would need replacing, i dont know what cleaning them would do for that.

well after 6 days with out my jeep i should be getting it back today. :) they put the fuel injectors and fuel rail on a cleaning tool and after cleaning they are working fine. just waiting on the replacement o-rings to come in.

oh about the cleaning of the fuel injectors and fuel rail. i asked them what they did. i was told that it is a fuel rail and injector cleaning tool. they remove the fuel rail along with the injectors and hook it up to this tool and fill it with a cleaner and release it thought the injectors. i was told the top of the injectors and the fuel rails were vary dirty and seams to be working fine now. hopefully i don't have to go back in anytime soon to replace the injectors.

well i guess i posted to soon on friday.... i went to pick my kj up friday night and had some of the worst news when i got there. the words no compretion in cylinder 4..... valve job....$2000...what a kick in the balls. 70,000 miles and i am ether looking for a new motor or looking at a valve job. by the way a gaskit kit from napa is $450 for a 3.7. anyway if anyone knows of some good sites to find a motor i would like to see them. i think it will be cheaper for me to replace it.

it seamed weird to me that i have had no noises at all not tap, ping or click from the motor. they said that i could be carbin build up or it could be a bent valve. they weren't realy sure they would only know till they tore it a part. they said that in no. 4 cylinder 3 out of 5 times there wasn't any compretion. if anyone as any info please send it my way

thanks for all the info everyone has given to me and i will let everone know when its back up and running and what i did to fix it.

Take it to a reputable private shop and get a second opinion. To quote a famous movie, they sound like a "monkey F***ING a football" when it comes to knowing how to repair things.
