This may not the THE problem that is throwing the codes but it certain is A problem! I've been searching for any potential leaks in the system that could have caused the codes but never saw any - until I tried pulling this off & it tore apart.

Has anyone else had their air intake completely rot out like this? Does anyone know where I can get one? I can't find it on moparpartsamerica or other sites . .

I don't think my Saikoumichi CCV condenser thingymabob is working very well. It looks great & is built well, but I'm not sure it is actually doing much because there's a lot of black slime on the inside right where it connected to the turbo. That is what I'm guessing caused the breakdown of the rubber. (Although by golly you'd think they would have made it from an oil-resistant material. But then again, they shouldn't have run the blow-by into it either.)

I don't know what to make of the oil buildup on the turbo. I appears to be coming from the bad connection, but why would it leak out if it was under vacuum? I'm surprised it would have made its way over to power steering reservoir. Perhaps it dripped out while parked & then the cooling fan blew it around??

Four. Mine did that too, and I didn't know about it until after the new engine... B/c the mechanic was nice enough to NOT TELL ME that it had to have been rotten when he was assembling it. So nice of him. :banghead:

Now I have an EHM and this is no longer a problem. Luckily that intake tube was one of the extra parts I got with the engine, so I didn't need to buy anything.

I was talking about three double-CRD owners, not that this has happened to me. I put the EHM into place early enough that this isn't happening to mine. If you don't have an EHM, your hoses and turbo will look all oily like that from seepage. Not to mention your turbo outlet hose looks like it's about to burst.

That make 3 so far, plus GDE, but he really needs 2 for R&D. I guess we appreciate CRDs, not to say the rest of you solo owners don't. But I think I will take a look at those hoses, seems to be a common problem?

I somewhat count... I'm a single, 22-yr-old college guy, so I only own one CRD. But my father is on his second one, after his first CRD got :dead: by a dump truck! So that makes three for my family :SOMBRERO:

Have a Provent or home made oil separator?
If not that is most likely the cause of the problem.
EHM will solve the problem too, but unless you put in a catch can, your CRD will mark its' territory on the driveway.

I have a Saikoumichi CCV condenser. I think it's probably a 1 man operation. I heard about it here on the forum but nobody knew much about it other than it was less expensive than the provent - so I tried it. It is beautifully constructed. But, I don't think it is actually doing much because there's still a lot of black slime - which is clearly what caused the intake rot.

I did the EHM when we first got these rigs, and put the outlet into a jar. But the fumes would waft up at stoplights no matter where I put the jar.

I know people have had good luck with the Provents and some have had good luck with homemade PVC versions as well. I think my next step will be my own design which I've been thinking about for a while to put on my wife's 06. (I haven't done any mods at all to hers yet - or even the TSBs - as I'm using my 05 as the guinea pig and comparison.)

Q: If you have a Provent or homemade unit, do you have ANY slime at all on the intake tube, or is it completely dry?

Thanks!

- Chris

Thanks for the link! I searched that site last night & could not find it . . .
Yep! I have TWO of these d@mn things! :dizzy: That's why I'm a "lifer" on this forum. Once I decided to keep them, I figured I was going to need the support - and I have needed it. (The only thing missing is a sticky thread where volunteer shrinks could help with those with thoughts of suicide when dealing with these :banghead: ) As everyone knows, it's a love/hate relationship with these mules. They are a blast to drive & I like the rattly little motor. But they are SO expensive to repair & so quirky you have to do your own work - and until now, I've never been a diesel mechanic. The rigs seem to know how to push my buttons but will suddenly start behaving just at the point I'm about to blow them up or run them off a cliff. They keep behaving well just to the point I start to trust them, and then throw another CEL and lead me down another rabbit hole. I keep a list of the things I've repaired or modified on my 05. I couldn't help but laugh & groan when I saw how long it was getting the other day as I was working through my oil pressure problem.

Add another one to the list to make it 4. My wife and daughter both drive them. We love em! 25+mpg on homebrew bio. Now thats cheap driving. I can deal with a few bugs to work out.

Showoff. :goink: With the parts collection I have from the old engine, I don't have just one CRD anymore either. I figure I'm at about 1.286344374546434 or so. Roughly.

The 95 Dodge Ram only has 300,000 miles on it but i figure when it dies in another 10 years and another 1/4 million miles I'll try and get my third Libby CRD

mine is cracked all the way through on the bottom side where the hose clamp goes, but it still has enough to clamp down on for a "good enough" seal. Its on my list to replace.

I wouldn't wait. It's hard to tell how it might be distorting when the throttle is wide open on a highway on ramp. If it distorts enough, it could be sucking road grit into the turbo & into your intake.

The part #: 53013104AE it averages $35 - $50
