Maybe a bit late but I had a 57 and had almost the same issue, found my exhaust valves were mal adjusted. Did you check the tolarence?, and how is that little baby fuel pump? :)

The fuel pump I have is the military version and has about 2 moving parts... no diaphragm or anything to worry about. Just now the oil pickup is soaking overnight to clean out the gunk. My oil pressure wasn't terribly good so I'm hoping that might help.

Pull a plug and smell - if it's getting gas it'll be there (if it's wet it's getting too much)

you can also hold the plug against a ground and see if it sparks (do not do this with an electronic ignition)

Spark is there... fuel is there.... just not sure if there's enough fuel to support higher workload...

Low oil pressure needs to get sorted out first though. I'd hate to get my fuel stuff resolved and find out the bearings are shot :goink:

Progress!!

I set out with a pile of parts and was determined to find out what was wrong...

first step (easiest)- change the fuel filter

What lovely present do I find? The previous owner put the fuel filter on backwards :banghead:

I installed the new one and went for a cruise... runs 100x better now but still not quite road-ready... I need to tune the carb/ignition timing. There's some sort of knock above 2500rpm when the engine's under load... I'm hoping it's an ignition problem and is simply detonation, maybe some overly worn valve guides, even some piston slap I can deal with.... just don't want it to be a rod bearing.

More fun ahead... :dizzy:

Let me guess your using regular unleaded gas?

Throw a double(or triple) does of lead additive and see how she runs since that engine was not designed to run on unleaded.

Your guess is wrong... I am running leaded fuel...

Thanks for the vote of confidence though (insert pirate salute here)

Where in the world can you even get leaded gas other than using a lead substitute? Sorry for being stupid I only remember when I was a kid and we went to the filling station the attendant would ask "Regular or Unleaded?" Regular meaning it have lead in it. Now a days theres's 3 grades of gas all of those unleaded plus Diesel at some stations and no attendants except in New Jersey where no one is compitent to pump their own fuel.

on the old distributors you have weights that advance the timing and a vacuum that retards it when under load - check the vacuum line and/or hook a mitivac to the line and see if it moves.
