Well, just for giggles I tried unplugging the MAF for the drive home tonight. FCV is still unplugged and no disc, and the SEGR is back in place. Still no change in performance for me.

No CEL for the MAF, oddly enough. I thought I would get that instantly, but no. But... Still the same dang problem. Step on the pedal, it accelerates OK to about 20mph, then just feels like there isn't any more *go* in it. Press harder on the pedal, and the engine sometimes gets louder, the EGT goes up, boost DOES NOT MOVE from about 6psi, and big clouds of black smoke.

Every so randomly, the engine will get louder with a lot of lifter noise (like a Powerstroke clattering) that it doesn't normally do. This is usually while the smoke is the thickest.

No matter what, let out of the pedal completely, and instantly go right back in - ZOOM and the boost rockets to 20psi.

Over the last few days however, I have noticed an annoying trend - When I NEED the boost (acceleration and going up a hill at close to WOT) it will DUMP almost all the boost at 40mph and again at 60mph. Drops almost instantly on my gauge from 22 psi to SIX. Takes forever to climb back up, seems to be irrelevant how hard the shift is, and just as it gets full boost again - 60mph and the boost is gone again.

This is usually while the EGT is at 1300+, or pegged at 1600. I still have no clue why it does this some days, and not others. It did not do this today, but it did the same 20mph-and-smoking thing, but when I released and went back into the throttle to the floor... It held all the way to 70mph, and the EGT was only at 1000. This is annoying.

Geordi, when my turbo hose blew (pressure side, going to the intercooler), it turned into a real dog. Ram it to the floor and it would still barely move. Very hard to maintain 55 mph and the engine temp rose too but I finally got it home. When she blew, it was catastrophic and I knew instantly what had happened (complete with a new whistle of the escaping air from the hose). The same thing occured when the hose blew off when I did not tighten the hose clamp enough upon reinstallation :banghead: of an OEM hose (which was much more durable than the hose from the factory floor). 45mph was difficult under these conditions. I would assume the higher EGT's being from the engine doing more (HP production) with less (sin turbo) and excess fuel not combusting where it should.

I would look very hard at your turbo or associated clamps and hoses going from it, it may even be something blocking air intake too but I doubt it. I would repost your problems in the forum under it own heading so that others may weight in.

The sound you hear is normal. Nothing wrong with it. Ignore it.

Geordi,

In the manual when describing tests to evaluate codes, they often state that problems not directly related to the sensor actually signaling the code could be the cause of a problem. Thus, even when a code says "X is faulty" it may actually be "Y" that is faulty, or even "Z". The problem is, the cause can be fairly far away system-wise from what the sensor is monitoring.

My problem (among others :-)r ) is that I find the manual rather cryptic or sometimes I just don't have the equipment they recommend to look further upstream.

I almost made my own smoke machine to find the leak in my intake last week. If I hadn't taken off the intake tube and had it tear, my next step was to take one of those little smoke bombs from last year's 4th July fireworks stash and place it inside the intake and then pressurize it with 1 psi shop air & watch for leaks. They recommend using a smoke machine for this when visual inspection otherwise fails to turn anything up. Perhaps you could try this? If I didn't have the smoke bombs I was going to use a few incense sticks - which would have at least made my engine smell nice. I suppose one could us cigarettes too, but I figured my wife would have thought I'd been hanging out at the bar. :5SHOTS:

Nope, the sound I had was NOT normal. I unplugged the FCV harness to eliminate LOUD buzzing. I changed my fuel filter today. While I was in the bleeding air process from new filter, I heard the other sound that some has said is normal.

After watching folks have FCV failures for years, mine looks to have finally gone (or is going). The normal "short electrical whine and click" that takes place 30 seconds after shutdown is now replaced by 5 or so periods of angry growling (followed by no click).

SO, I think the flapper is seized and the servo is straining to actuate it. Anyone actually serviced the flapper assembly to clean/revitalize it? I'd like to have it functional but am not looking forward to replacement cost of that part (if I can even find it).

Dan

I gots a spare that is in good condition, PM me if you are interested. Mine (on the engine) is dead and gutted, so I'm never gonna use the spare. It was disabled at 30k with the SEGR.

It's completely normal. Just the sound of it going to sleep.
