muddin tires

Ok group, when I put my new wheels on my KJ, I saved the stock rims for mudding. Now I am researching the best muddin tire to put on those rims. I will have the 2" lift so I can go with a more agressive tread pattern, but I would like to stay with roughly the same diameter. What do you all suggest?

It really depends on what type of wheelin you do and how much you want to spend. For mud I would suggest SuperSwamper's. For Rocks I would suggeset MTR's or ProComp X-Terrains. For Trail Riding (Mud/Rocks) I would suggest BFGoodrich Mud-Terrains.

Check out the tire section down the page, lots of info on tires. Mud tires vary in price and performance depending on the size. So your budget will most likely dictate what you can afford. 245/75/16's are the norm with a lift.

I have 245/75R16 Firestone Destination M/Ts. They have yet to let me down in anything. Their only weaknesses are ice and packed snow on the road, but this holds true for any mud-terrain tire. They self-clean better than any other tire I've ever seen, in snow and mud, and grip well on the rocks I've climbed. Check out my cardomain to see what I've taken them through. At 6,000 miles I have some scrapes on them from the rocks, but that's all the wear I can see.

I read that article and it did explain alot about what mud tires are for and what to look for in one. Everything seems to be a science these days! I am now just a bit more equipped to make a choice. With all of your help, I am going to blow the socks of the guys at the tire shop!!! LOL.

Glad I was able to help.. I was like you.. I was up in the air about mud tires and ran into that article when I did a google search.. I like how they used the same Jeep and rims.. And they made additional runs on some of the tires to make sure their results were accurate... They didn't do all the tires that are out there, but they did the most popular ones... If I were to get mud tires.. I think I would go either with the BFG MT or the Goodyear MT/R... From the test results.. As for the Super Swamper tires, they are very wide tires.. Not sure if they would fit under a KJ.. But you have to dig those Boggers.. Talk about super mud tires..

My BFG MT's have performed much better than the MTR's I have seen. Where the MTR's have slipped on rocks and loose dirt, my BFG's have gripped like crazy!

BFG MT are good tires in the mud and are tolerable for pavement use as long as you rotate them. I got almost 20,000 miles on a set that was mostly driven on the pavement. The hands down best mud tire I've ever seen was a Super Swamper Bogger. They throw mud chunks so big you have to be careful about who/what is behind you. I'm talkin softball size chunks @ 45mph!!! I learned the hard way. One broken windshield=one lesson learned. Absolutely the loudest and most vibrating tire on the pavement.

a buddy of mine just put Trxus mud terrains on his rig. They are incredible. Forget the Procomps-their terrain is pretty weak. Another friend of mine runs em on his rig and my cheapo generic all terrains get me everywhere his procomps do.

If the tire will be used off road only, I would get a bias-ply. They have thicker sidewalls so they won't get torn up as easy as a radial. They also conform better to terrain. A 245/75 is the norm.

The Trxus Mud Terrains always get good reviews and is a very capable tire. Even ask Rock Lizard, he swears by em. My friend runs his tires everyday on his rig even on our snow and ice which mud terrains have never been very good on. He loves em and they perform as well as if not better then the Good Year Wrangler MT/R's. The Good Years and the BFG is a lot of money for the name. Don't get me wrong, both are a great tire. But I feel the Trxus is better tire for the money.

The other option that I have seen perform well is the Super Swamper TSL. This is old tire design made by Interco and is PROVEN to be a great tire. Prices are fairly reasonable. If you show up with a set of these, people will know you're serious!

The Super Swamper Bogger is a great tire but I think the lugs are a bit wide for the KJ and you would run into some SEVERE rubbing unless you went to a 235/85 or something.

Opinions anyone? I basically just go mudding and light trail riding a few times a year. The guys at Big O recommended the Nanking, a Japanese brand. He said they don't last as long but for the type of driving I do, they would work great, the lugs clean out well. I will not be driving on these tires daily, strictly mudding outings. What do you all think? I have never heard of this brand before.

After you put a set of 31" M/T's on and experience the extra lift and looks, I doubt you'll want to take them off. :lol:

I have 33x12.50x15 BFG MT's on my LJ Rubicon. They are sipped and work great! If you can hold on a little while longer, BFG is due to release their new MT soon. Either that, or Kuhmo's newer MT. It's on their website. Their so new that their just comming off the production line and look SWEET! You can't beat Kuhmo's prices.

The Buckshot Mudder or the Bighorn are to be the most
popular and/or best performing. So they say.
I am going to pick them up for my next set.

Durango MT's 31X10.5 are what I am running. They are a Hurculese tire... tirerack.com you can see them there... They are un sipped, so they blow on rain/snow/ice... but the treads are really widely spaced.. and deep! They throw chunks like swampers, growl like a mofo on the road, and kill your mileage... BUT THEY KICK booty!!! I have been completely bogged down and stuck going forward in mud up to the lug nuts... cut the wheel a bit back and forth and you will inch you way out. I have had people riding with me and they think that I am stuck, I have amazed them when just keep going.

the best part is that I only paid $90 a piece for them. so far there is 15kmi on them and still half tread.
