At some point did you replace the fuel head with the new style?

The old style leaks at the heater plug.

"I bleed the air out, but the symptoms didn't change" - the symptom doesn't change because you didn't fix the problem - air getting in - is the problem - that fact that there's enough to bleed out just tells you how big the problem is - a lift pump will pressurize it enough to overcome the leak - but to fix the leak you have to change the head - and Oh yeah - the CAT makes it worse because it's a finer filter and bad fuel makes it worse because it clogs the filter.

So changing a filter is the first step - but a new head and/or a lift pump still sounds like it needs to be on the list.

It will run fine with air in the system. I bleed once a week, every 500 miles and it takes 15 pumps divided into 3-4 bleed cycles to get it all out. Been doing that for 60,000 miles now.

For 60k miles!?! Why not spend $80 and get the new fuel head... takes all of 30 minutes to install and your problem is gone.

I guess because it hasn't given me any trouble yet. It takes me 30 seconds to bleed. I make it a weekly thing while I check the oil level and fill up the squirter fluid. If I noticed some driveability issues I'd do it.

With no air buildup in the filter head there does not seem to be a problem and my factory one is fine thanks. Why fix it if it ain't broke :SOMBRERO:

Exactly. And a new filter head isn't going to solve air coming from the fuel line fittings.

Here is a few questions that I have. How can one test for leaks on the quick connect fittings at the tank when they are under vacuum? And how much air is entrained in the fuel itself? And how much air would it take to be harmful to the cp3 and the injecters? I have a new OEM filter head and all under hood hose connections are tight, but I still pump air out at every tank fill. I'm not having anymore drivability issues at this time though.
Thanks, Dan

I think we have the no foam formula of fuel over here. but there is always going to be some. Try keeping your fuel tank full to avoid sloshing. It doesn't hurt the injectors. Rather, the fuel heater will melt the electrical plug and cause leaks if it is allowed to get too hot. The fuel cools the conection, and if air is there, it may overheat.

Are you pumping air out just to pump air or are you still having starting issues? If you have no starting/drivability problems why are you still pumping? You will always have some air in the filter head.

The entrained air in the fuel goes to the highest point in the fuel system and on the CRD that's the filter head :banghead: To that add air entering from fuel fittings intended for a pressurized gasoline system and the problem is worsened. I was very supprised to see how little resistance my rear fittings needed to plug together.

As far as low/no foam fuel very little of the fuel I see is low/no foam. A big problem is there are no standards for diesel in the US. I saw one Flying-J station in Virginia posting 45 Cetane or more and every where else it's posted minimum 40 Cetane rated including the flying J just down I77 from where I found the 45  :banghead: :juggle: I think Washington State has the right idea of requiring all diesel to have B5 :jester: More would be better but I think B5 would go a long way to insure proper lubrication of our CP3 pump.

I see that fuel is different too. I fill up around home and the fuel is usually rated at 40 Cetane minimum, in Mayland it could be 40 or 45. I filled up once in West Virgina and the pump was labeled 45 minimun cetane. I hear in europe the standard is often over 50. A few stations here are 5% bio but very few and none alone routes of my daily travels.

And our VM R428 engines being from Europe prefer 50 cetane

ALL of the US based ECM tuners slightly advance the injection timing to compensate for the crappy 40 cetaine fuel we have. Shut off the EGR and you will get the effect of a slight cetain boost to improve, power, fuel economy, and over all running. When I worked for a Perkins distributor years ago, we would have to advance the timing 2 degrees on the Perkins engines to get rid of the white smoke at start up.
The number one excuse I have heard as to why we have the crappy 40 cetaine, is that the Over the Road Trucking Industry does not want to have their timing reset to allow their older trucks to run on 50 cetaine. :banghead: :banghead:

They use to advance the 3054's and 3056's in the small CAT excavators 4 degrees due to the crappy fuel and altitude............

I have had drivabiliity problems in the past. Even though I could not find any leakage or overheating at the old filter head I recently replaced it with a new OEM unit. All under hood hose connections are tight. I have continued to monitor the air trapped at the filter head by bleeding it out. More air with longer wait between bleeding intervals. My jeep has been running great while doing this. The new OEM filter head may have fixed the problem, but I'm afraid to stop checking for air for fear of stalling out in the passing lane of the interstate highway again. Comforting advice is all I'm asking for.

$50 Mr Gasket lift pump, installed at the tank (not in the tank) will provide 4-6 psi of fuel to the filter and completely eliminate any air in the system by filling those high places in the system with FUEL. The fuel priming button becomes a cool visual accent in the engine then, it will always be solid with pressure and replacement of a filter is a snap - Swap the filter, and key-on (don't start it) for 15 seconds... Filter full.

I haven't had any problems at all with mine since I put that on. Best mod I've made.
