The 42RLE is a good trany, there are many forum members that have 150,000-200,000 trouble free miles out of them. You can buy an aftermarket TC if you want to beef it up.

45RFE gear ratio's..........

The 45RFE later became the 5-speed 545RFE.

* Gear Ratios:
o 1st 3.00:1
o 2nd 1.67:1
o 2nd Prime 1.50:1
o 3rd 1.00:1
o 4th 0.75:1
o Reverse 3.00:1
* 545RFE only:
o 5th 0.67:1

42RLE.....................

Gear Ratios:

* 1st - 2.84
* 2nd - 1.57
* 3rd - 1.00
* 4th - 0.69

The 42RLE also started life out as the A604 which was a FWD tranny used in the very 1st gen minivans.

4 = 4 forward speeds
2 = torque capacity from 1-10(1 being the lowest)
R = rear drive
L&E = limited electrically controlled

4 = 4 forward speeds
5 = torque capacity
R = rear drive
F&E = Full electronically controlled trans

Mine has the 42, works fine w/ the sfa. Wheeled hard and driven often.

Many built and wheeled TJ's use it and I'm not seeing any complaints.
