The plastic that is around the actual sensor snapped off since it was really thin and flimsy plastic during removal. I super glued the piece back on but I need an opinion. Should I simply leave it off, letting the sensor support itself, or leave it on with the super glue. If that piece comes off, will it hurt my engine in any way. Also, this is only a temporary measure until I get a new sensor. Thanks!

Alright it's all done, but now that begs the question, will it honestly suffer if that little piece of plastic isn't there? As far as I know it's working.. If it wasn't, what would be the signs?

I have to assume that the PCM monitors that sensor (among others too) to adjust the fuel/air mixture ratio. If it was indeed faulty then your engine would run rough and the CEL would come on.

Can't you find a plastic straw and slip it over the sensor and hot melt/pinch off the end? It sounds like it would work as simply as the stock sensor cover.

The only issue I can see with not having the plastic cage around the thermocouple (blue coated part of the sensor) is that it might flex a bit and stress the connections at the base of the TC which could eventually lead to a failure of the sensor. If it were on my Jeep I'd run it as is until I could get a replacement.
