So....iv been reading that the CAT 1R 0750 is a better filter, however the OEM unit contains the water warning. I want to keep the stock head or replace it with the new OEM version. All i want to do it the CAT filter upgrade. What do you guys suggest? I will also be runing an in line lift pump and a pre filter before the lift pump. Think i will have issues? worth the risk? Seen alot of guys runing the CAT filter, seen alot of guys say no. This is a catch 22. I just hit 59k miles and have had the crd for almost a month now and i don think it has ever been changed. I need to do something soon.

IMO, the stock WIX filter medium is fine... just replace the head unit with the new OEM part.

If you really can't live without a 2 micron filter, then you can also consider the Racor filter head. It's quite a bit more expensive, but it's a well built piece.

The CAT adapter was a machined tube that fit into the stock fuel head - Greg made ~100 or so - and when they sold out he didn't make any more - the real issue was that some folks wanted the CAT to fix a problem fuel head - they couldn't - it made it worse and several of the installs caused more problems, and may have killed Inj Pumps. The water in fuel sensor was never a big issue.
Correctly done on a good head many of these of the installs are still running fine.

No one's had any problems with the Racor - it costs more - filters are cheaper than stock more than the CAT (it's common on boat applications)
This is a good writeup http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=98&t=36977

The new fuel head fixed most of the original problems - I've only heard of one person that had problems with it - the concern is the filter - Mopar doesn't list specs on the filter - Wix has the replacement - they list as 10 micron. they appear to have paper elements while the CAT/Racor and probably Stanadyne are synthetic.
I got mine at Mopar Parts America ~$100 total

I've only heard of 2 folks running Stanadyne - both are happy.

(Caution: no single number adequately describes a filter - it needs to be an efficiency at a size - you can actually have the same filter described as 2 and 10 micron - there's no real standard - long story)

Well that pretty much covers my question. thanks! I will just go ahead and get the new OEM head and wix filter assembly.

If someone wants a Cat adapter and filter I just took one off a car I sold. It was working fine.

If you really really want a Cat filter in line, just buy a cheap universal filter head with the right thread size from Summit or someplace and plumb it in line after the stock one, as a kind of polishing filter.

Well, all i have read was that a bunch of guys did the cat filter mod and had air issues, not sure why? bad seal? not primed? who knows....So i have no clue what the thread pitch would be, the OD, standard, metric, all that bs i would have to figure out.....

What you think? what you run?

I run a 1R-0749 on my jeep. My wife's is OEM just because I don't want to answer questions if I bring it to the dealer on warranty. I think most problems with the Cat adapter were due to operator error. It happened to me too. I took mine back apart because there was fuel seeping out somewhere. Turns out it was the bleed screw! I had to take it out, lap it a little and then CRANK it down. I will never open it again because I have the lift pump.

Here's what I found on the web about cat filters and filter heads.

Quote:
Cheapest easiest, simplest way to add a CAT Filter is to purchase a Permacool Fuel Filter / Water Seperator Kit ($35.88 at Summit Racing.) and a CAT 1R-0750 filter from a CAT dealer for about $11.00.

Permacool makes 3 filter heads that use the 1"-14 Thread
Perma-Cool 88864 High Flow Filter Head (3/4" NPT Inlet / Outlet)
Perma-Cool 81794 High Performance Filter Head (Dual 1/2" NPT Inlet / Outlet)
Perma-Cool 81074 Universal Fuel Filter/Water Separator Kit

The CAT filters Thread up to the Permacool Filter heads Perfectly.
