This may sound weaird, but do you have to jack up the rear to change the lube? I know how to do everything else. I just was wondering if your putting up the rear for space to be able to work or what.

With it lifted you should not have to, I do mine without lifting it at all, actually do all of the fluid changes without lifting it.

Thats what I thought. For some reason when my fiance was asking me what I was planning on doing today and mentioned diff cover and a few other projects on the KJ, she asked about lifting it. I will never listen to her again....lol.

What oil should be used in the Rear diff?

I sooooo got to walk away from that one :goink: :goink: :ROTFL: :ROTFL:

Seriously Troy, most people use 75/80W90 for normal duty, heavy duty would be like 90W140. Just get a good synthetic in the lower weight you should be fine.

I never had to jack up my Tahoe to work under it....even when it wasn't lifted.... :goink: :goink: :goink: :goink:

Not required to jack it up lifted or not. I am stock height, and have no trouble. I went with a Felpro gasket this time instead of RTV. Used a tad to pre-glue it on the cover, but that is it.

if for any reason you feel cramped, you can jack the body up to create a little more room, just make sure ya use jackstands or some other method

my lubelocker is currently on it's 3rd interval, no seeps or leaks so far

Posted this once before and hope this is usefull.

A hippie down the street(dude with two old 70's vans),told me to jack up one side for about 45 minutes, then jack other side up for an hour to maximize drainage of old fluid.

Not to thread jack, but I think it is relevant..
So they say;
normal duty 75/80W90
heavy duty 90W140

Does the differential fluid affect the MPGs?
Lets say I don't tow or do anything crazy to over work the truck, just A LOT of highway driving, would the heavier weight cause the MPGs to be lower?

eh

beans add up

some say yes, and some don't pay attention lol

when you're dealin with a range of say 15 to 22mpg

well, lets put it this way, you won't simply drop from 25mpg to 18 just because you ran HD

and ya not going to go from 18 to 24 just by runnin street weight either

at 750ish for a rebuild it's worth it to use good juice, and the right juice for your use

I put the HD, I figured it's better protection in the long run.
Maybe I'll put the lesser next time, just for fun.

I use the hitch to lift the body up while the axle stays on the ground. This gives some extra room to work with.

I use Mobil 1 75w-140.
