Well, I know most of what it takes to change it, just got one question.
Is there any type of gasket I need to use before I put the cover back on?
Or some RTV or something?

no... there is a filler on the front passenger side ( 3/8 " socket) and a drain (8mm allen for me) on the bottom center behind the seam

you dont take the front apart.

the drain has a gasket on the plug

dont forget teflon tape to put around the plugs.

It's best to take the cover off the get all the fluid out and inspect the gears and stuff, RTV seals it back up. I never heard of using teflon tape.

lol ok i was like OMG NOOOOO

http://www.jeepkj.com/forum/showthread. ... 670&page=2

and there is a nice video somewhere but i cant find it right now..

he does front and rear diff and the xfer case

for what its worth i did mine entirely on the ground until i had to refill the rear.. since i didnt have any flex tube i had to lift the rear of the jeep to get a better angle with the bottle..

in the future ill get some pvc tubing to direct the fluid in and not even touch a jack.

darn, I was looking for that how to. lol

Idk why but for some reason I was thinking the front cover had to come off. lol

Its sitting in the garage draining all the old oil out now so it'll be ready to go after it all drips out and it gets refilled.
Only got 75w90 because it was cheap and I'm not going to be wheeling it much anymore, if at all. :)

My real diff cover has a rubber plug. No teflon there either.

you wrap the tefflon tape around the threads to help prevent leaks and make it easier to remove.. thsi is for the plugs on the front diff and the plugs in the xfer case.

and ya my rear diff plug was a rubber plug.. i think a new cover with aproper plug is in my future.

I don't see any upgrades in my jeeps future. :p

But, new fluid is in and the front diff seems MUCH happier.
Doesn't have that slight little grumble it had anymore.
Even checked the old fluid for metal shavings with my eyes and a magnet. :D

I've got a pretty good fluid pump that i use to jet fluid up into the front diff after it's drained and give it a quick rinse with .5-1pt of clean juice before sticking the plug back in, do the same with the transfer case, don't always see anything in the flushing fluid but occasionally some "extra" junk will come out, but mine never look too dirty anyway

My fluid was soooo dirty and gross.
I don't think my dad ever had it changed.
It may have gotten changed once or twice in the 107k it has.

youre supposed to change it every 30k..
maybe for the next one you should change it in 10 or 15k..

im sure the others will chime in on this idea.

my theory being that itll help get the nastiness out.

Actually the F/R diff service interval for your Jeep is every 12k-15k.
