Being the maintenance freak that I am, I perform a drain and fill approximately every 20,000 miles on my Jeeps and every 15,000 miles on my truck. I figure that there are several quarts that can’t be drained, so every 15,000 - 20,000 should keep everything fairly fresh and clean. All 3 of my vehicles have a drain plug, so it makes it easy.

Mate, on the 545RFE and 45RFE the transmission can be easily identified by a sticker on the left side of the transmission case just above the pan. On the 42RLE in the petrol models it's somewhere on the other side of your transmission case. Basically if you look where I described for the 45RFE, and it's not there, you have a 42RLE. This is the easiest way to find it.

just check me here... I am putting in 4 quarts and maybe a little more after I drained and put on a new filter. So how do I know when it is full?
Do I start it, put it in neutral and then let it run for a bit, then check it?

before you do anything make sure you have fluid on the dip stick. if you are showing full on the dip stick start it up and allow it to idle for 5 - 10 min with the tranny in park. with the engine running check the fluid level again and add as nessessary
