Hi all, going to replace my clutch and flywheel. Got those parts ordered, but I cannot find a part number for the pilot bearing in the crankshaft...(I cannot even find a pilot bearing in the '02 or '05 parts list ..)

Can anyone help me out?

Do we even know if it uses one?

Sam, I was hoping you knew that. :juggle:

Looking at this I am sure we do use something...

I just remembered there was a thread from a guy in SA who pulled his gearbox because of a busted pressure bearing:

Oh, can't get the pilot bearing separately, you need to buy the flywheel, they come as a set (wow, some brainie dude must have thought that one up). The only manufacturer who is oblivious to replacing a pilot bearing when replacing the clutch.

I wish I had my stuff in a position to check it to see. Not every vehicle uses pilot bearings(though nearly all do).

Any aversion to just not replacing it? Most of the time I forgo that step as it feels pretty useless with the bronze bushings. (vs real bearings)

Ok, confirmed, we do have a pilot bearing, it's a real needle bearing.

And it comes with the dual mass flywheel.....

What's a dual mass flywheel:

This looks like the CRD flywheel. They forgot the pilot bearing in this pic..

I'll get some pics of the real thing later.

Tony: Stock VW TDIs also use a Dual Mass Flywheel as do some larger US built Pickups with manual transmissions. Personally I feel a Dual Mass Flywheel is a Bean Counter Engineering trick to reduce overall flywheel mass and cost by having two sections. One is fastened to the crank and the other is coupled so it can slip and dampen out the excess torsional vibrations and allow faster rev ups. Another thing that soured my taste for Dual Mass Flywheels is when my Wife's TDI Dual Mass Flywheel blew up.
For the TDI and the larger US built Pickups with manual transmissions, there are Aftermarket Suppliers who sell Heavy Duty Single Mass Flywheels. I have played around with and made custom fabricated flywheels before and they are not Rocket Science. If you want to engineer one for the CRD, send me a PM and I will give you the details on how to do it.

I am afraid that a solid flywheel will give to much vibrations on my 2.5...

Now that the old one is worn out (the spring within the flywheel is dead) my KJ shakes at stationairy revs...

TDI owners and Large US Built Pickup owners who have had dual mass flywheel headaches would not agree. If Chrysler had used a solid flywheel, you could have resurfaced yours instead of throwing it away.
With my SunCoast converter that uses a billet front cover the flywheel mass is increased which puts less stress on the dampener springs. Also the increased flywheel mass results in a smoother running engine.
Since you live in Europe you can check out the dimensions of comparable VM engines used in industrial applications. I would bet the industrial type fly wheel will be solid and not much if any larger. But if you have no means to buy or make a solid flywheel, you are stuck with stock, too bad :banghead: :banghead:
