so ive had this clicking coming from my rear axle assembly for some time now.... i went and got gear oil and silicone RTV today to pull the diff cover and inpect inside the rear diff.... i was advised to change the fluid in the rear diff and see if that stops the click... i dont have the trac-lok rear end so i wont be adding the extra friction modifier additive to the fluid.... i have a feeling that just changing the fluid isnt gonna solve the problem though..... ill be happy as hell if it does though.... is there anything in particular i should looking for when i pull the diff. cover off...? other than the obvious stuff like chipped gears, is there any way to tell if any of the bearings are shot or anything of that sort....? since im under there changing fluids, im probably gonna do the front diff and transfer case along with the transmission and tranny filter....... i noticed the tranny filter comes with a pan gasket... is there any need for RTV along with the gasket....?

Everytime I change any fluid i put a magnet in the bottom of whatever i am emptying into and check it for any metal build up on it. If the bearings in your rear are going then you should have quite a bit of build up on the magnet. And as for the transmission pan gasket no RTV is needed most of the time just make sure your bolts are tourqed to spec and keep and eye on it for a few days to be 100% sure.

the haynes manual i have says nothing about a gasket. they say to use a bead of RTV around it.... just wondering though. it wouldnt make much sense to give you a gasket to just throw away... but not a lot people do does make any sense these days..... thanks for the responses
