We purchased an used, gasser, sport, 09 liberty, with stock, p225 x 75 r 16 goodyear st tires ?...mild radials... question.... When off road... trail riding (not aggressively) ... and perchance a mild rut or tree root is across our path.... I hear a sound that alternates between front left and front right as tires are possibly slipping, climbing the obstacle .... it sounds like gears failing to mesh in a manual transmission...( ours is an automatic and sound does not appear to be in main transmission area, but rather from the front corners) being new to the Jeep scene I am not sure if it is tires hitting the wheel wells or typical vehicle sounds?... I do know I have never heard this type of noise anywheres other than a failure to mesh gears in a manual trans... we are approaching the 3 year 36k mile warrranty expiration and would like to clarify this before hand. We did have the vehicle inspected again after our purchase by a seperate dealer and were told all is good and that it was a good vehicle/ purchase price. Is it possible this is a characteristic trait of the command trac II? that maybe it alternates torque to various wheels based on need? any advice would be appreciated... because other than taking a dealers mechanic on the trail I have no idea how to reproduce this occurance. no codes showed on the mechanics computors either in the garage. I have posted this on another site and nobody had enough experiance with this system to propose anything other than taking the mechanic for a ride....

sounds like the esp. does the vehicle with squiggly lines behind flash when this happens and feel a loss in power? sounds like grinding but its just the abs grabbing whichever corner it senses excessive wheel spin. if this is the case, all is well.

Um, DirtyKK would wheels spin not be traction control where as esp electronic stability would be for skidding, like the rear end breaking loose?

I think Scar-o has a way to do it. I don't know were to find it. I'm sure someone will find it for you.

pull the abs fuse. pushing the esp button only heightens the point of when it kicks on.

thanks ya'all... we have been exploring the heck outa western michigans trails... really don't like to hear that noise without knowing what it is, and if it is indicative of damage or not. seems odd that JEEP would put a system in their vehicles to limit independent wheel spin... (when that is all that happens off road)... without permitting it to be turned off when needed. hopefully someone has a way... as brakes locking when your foot is on the gas on purpose has to increase wear and tear. Maybe here's a idea for the next mod... a switchable abs disconnect from the drivers seat.

found it, dirty.... thankyou for the link. I rerun some trails tonight... abs is more than likely it... light came on... brake chatter(that noise again), power to wheels faded and returned... with the noise. I believe ya'll solved it for me... really appreciate the input from you and cherrie.
