VA has been around for a while, according to the Cummins crowd over on TDR forum they make one of the better plug-in modules for the Cummins, good quality, good results, reasonable price. But I haven't heard that they're making anything for the CRD as of yet.

I went to the website. If you look at Europe they list the 2.8CRD Cherokee. Nothing listed for the US spec CRD.

I tried to call the company and the phone number doesn't seem to work.I went to there site and found the correct phone # IT is 208-904-0920. I changed this in my original post I called them for some info. It is a 2 setting unit for mid and higher power mid is 15 hp and 20ft lbs torque high setting is for 25 hp and 37 ft lbs torque. The price tag retail $629. I also asked if it was for the USA CRD they said yes they are working on updating there web page to include it. Hope this helps someone that is interested. April issue of Four Wheeler also has an article on there first report of the long term test of a 2005 CRD all reports are possitive.

Just as a side note, Popular Mechanics and Motorweek (tv show on pbs) also have the CRD as a long term test vehicle.

I sent them an email... they wrote back:

Thank you for your interest in van Aaken products. We do have a module for the Jeep Liberty with the common rail diesel engine. It will add an additional 25 h/p and app. 60 lb/ft of torque. Many customers report a fuel mileage increase – some as much as 5 mpg improvement. The module retails for $629. The dealer/distributor nearest you is Dominator Performance Diesel. The telephone number is 208-637-2100 or their website is www.dominatordiesel.com.

I just sent VA an e-mail as well, asking them just how their box worked, and what it plugged in to. I also asked them point-blank that if their box raised pressure, if it kept it within factory limits so as not to lift the pressure limiting/safety valve.

I tried calling Dominator Diesel first, but from what they told me, they haven't received any of the factory spec sheets on it yet and couldn't swear as to how it actually worked.

VA is working on a new module for the Dodge Cummins. Doesn't use pressure at all, just injector timing and injector pulse width (timing/duration). TST Products module for the Cummins works the same way. Now, if they'd just make one like this for the CRD.

Got an answer back from Van Aaken today. Quick response.

Big news is the new version of their Smartbox for the U.S. version of the CRD DOES NOT REPEAT NOT use pressure boosting or fooling.

Primary method their Smartbox is using is duration/pulse width.

Basic wiring connections are to each of the four injectors, and a positive and negative battery connection.

Person that replied also noted that reported mileage gains were anywhere from 1 to 4 mpg when driven for economy.

Hmm. So does that mean this should be professionally installed? I'm not afraid to wrench on things but tapping into injector wiring (unless it's a simple "plug this in between the wiring harness and injector" thing) seems a little beyond me.

I'd say it's virtually 100% certain they'll use connectors that will mate up with the factory harness, every other module I've seen does, including VA's other modules.

Mitchell,

Thanks for the response.

Any thoughts on how this would affect EVIC mpg readings? Would the readings be suspect after adding this module?

That makes me feel better. Thanks.
