yeah that's what I use. it's the one that comes in blue bottles/jugs. last time I got it they renamed it to Rotella T6..... same thing.

You will find most here use THe synthetic Rotella, Mobil one turbo diesel truck or Amsoil. I like the Rotella cus its easy to get Wal-Mart has it for $19.50/ gallon. just stay away from the rotella in white containers it's dino based and not one of the weights recomended for our diesel engines.

If you do the research, you will see that Rotella "T" is considered to be a "semi" synthetic. I use it in my Ford 7.3 PSD, but I use Mobil 1 in the Jeep CRD so as to not push my luck with our DCJ warranty.

I use it and change every 10,000mi with a Mobil 1 filter. Oil analysis results came back fine so I will continue to use it.

Sure, just use their 5W-40 diesel rated oil.

Sure, it is pretty good stuff. I am not using it, for other reasons, but it is a solid product. Make sure it is the T6 Rotella. The T5 is a blend.

Use it and sleep easy.

Sorry to hijack.

Hey, I just bought the T-6 Rotella 5w40 yesterday. I'd like to get a really decent oil filter to clean a lot of the darn soot out of the oil.

I've heard of bypass filters, regular filters efficient to "X" microns and snake-oil salesmanship.

Can someone smarter than me please let me know what is the ideal filter for my CRD? Thanks.

I use nothing but Purolator filters on my stuff. The best money can buy...and they are only around $6.50 or so from Advance Auto Parts.

Shell Rotella 5W40 oil...ESPECIALLY in this hot Summer weather.

I use an extra large one from NAPA. With the GDE tune it by passes the EGR so IIRC you are NOT recirculating the soot and leaves the oil a little cleaner.

This one?

NAPA Gold Oil Filters Hold 45% More Dirt + Last 30% Longer Than Other Leading Competitive Brands.; 30Micron

30 Micron filter size? Hmm. Seems a little porous.

I've been using the M1-301 Mobil 1 filter. It's a little bigger than stock, but I never noticed a diffference in the color of the oil until after the GDE tune. Before the tune, the oil would get black as coal in 100 miles, even running the ORM to reduce the EGR. With the reduction in EGR with the new tune, the oil stays honey colored for thousands of miles. It's a night and day difference.

The stock filter seems to be well made (albeit expensive) Wix/Napa make a good product, and Mobil and Amsoil filters are also quite good. The good thing is that nobody seems to make a "bad" filter that fits this engine :)

As for soot, that's a symptom of using it in a diesel. You can reduce it, but you'll never get rid of it. That's what diesel-formulations in oils are for, to keep abrasive carbon particles isolated in suspension so they don't chain together and make a nasty little saw to cut the insides of your engine apart.

Both bypass and centrifuge filters work well to remove smaller particles and extend engine life and oil drain intervals (if desired) and operate on a similar concept: Use a better filtering method slowly on a fraction of the oil flow that's not in the critical path of the cooling system so they can do their job better. Think tortoise and hare. bypass and centr. are the former.

Bypass filters are similar to normal filters, just with a much denser medium and a slower flow rate. Centrifuge filters are just that: They have either a oil-pressure-based or small electric motor that spins around inside a hollow shell at high RPM, flinging the dirty oil against the shell and the sticky, dirty bits stick while the clean bits drain back into the sump or other oil passage. No filter elements to replace, just wipe out with a rag.

I'd love to try both the space inside the the CRD's engine bay doesn't really lend itself to either :)

Dan

I have done oil sampling on my CRD at 7000 miles on OEM filter at various times and haven't found the soot levels to be that big of an issue. True, we do not like the look of black oil. An oil bypass system is not a bad idea, but probably not necessary. Putting one on the Jeep may be more of an expense and hassle than the benefits it produces. Diesels are built to higher standards than gasoline engines and there is ample evidence of EGR equipped diesels going well into the 700,000 to 800,000 mile range with no major problems using standard oils and OEM filters. The CJ-4 standard diesel oils do a really great job of keeping the soot from bonding and making particles large enough to be a real problem. Most soot is below 5 microns and only soot particles larger than 5 microns are a real problem. A good synthetic mesh full flow filter, like Amsoil, Donaldson, etc will do a pretty darn good job of keeping the larger stuff out of the oil, compared to a cheaper paper style filter that does not have quite the uniformity of filtration. You have to keep in mind that as a filter gets used and collects more particles, its cleaning effeciency actually goes up. Air filters are "dirtier" early on compared to after being in service for a while. As they collect more dirt, they actually are able to better collect dirt beyond that. Same is true for oil filters.

I really like the Amsoil EO filters. They are made by Donaldson (same manufacturer filters I use in my semi). The Wix brand is a very reputable filter (this is also the Napa Gold filter). There are others that do a good job, but these are the only ones other than OEM that I have real experience with. If one is bound and determined to go with a bypass, then only two choices seem to be practical for the CRD... the Amsoil bypss or the FS2500, due to limited space. The FS unit has a complete kit with hoses, fittings, ect designed for the CRD (this is per a conversation with FS I had when I bought one for my Semi). Whereas, the Amsoil unit requires you to get your own hoses made and is more of a Popular Mechanics style of project. Both units do a pretty good job. Initial cost for the Amsoil unit may be less, but filters for the FS unit are considerably cheaper so over the long term it would all balance out. Don't get all caught up in the 98% effeciency at 2 micron arguments. My real world experience with the FS unit on a semi over 300,000 miles has shown that it keeps soot levels down to less than .3% average which is more than enough real world protection. Only when soot levels go over a full 3% - 4% is soot a real issue. I have never seen my CRD approach those levels without a bypass.

The only true benefit of a bypass unit is if one is going to really extend their oil drain intervals well above anything the OEM recommends. If you are sticking to the owners manual recommendations, I wouldn't recommend a bypass unless you have money lying around and don't know what to do with it. The cost vs benefit is just not there.

I was reading a web sight where a guy cut apart just about every oil filter brand he could find. He compared the plus and minuses and found the Purolator One to be the best and Fram to be the worst. He also said if you wanted a Purolator One at a cheap price to get the Ford Motorcraft as it was the same as the Purolator One.

Although it is bigger, a Motorcraft FL-1A will fit our CRD. :)

I have read where the soot (graphite like) particles in suspension actually help lubricate.

Soot is not like graphite, and no, it is not something that will enhance lubrication. If particles are large enough, they can start pitting on cam and rod bearing surfaces. This is the primary reason that CI-4+ and now CJ-4 standards were developed with regards to diesel engine oils..... to keep the soot particles from bonding into larger particles and keep them in suspension.
