I put my 245/70-16 Grabber AT2's on at 36,000 miles, and at 97,000 they have about 1/3 the tread left. Having driven them 61,000 miles, they have been a great all-terrain tire! I'm due for new tires, and although I love the look of the Goodyear DuraTrac, I will probably go with another set of Generals because I can just about cover the full-size spare with the money saved. I've never had a full-size spare. Shame on me!

I think part of the reason they've lasted so long is regular tire rotations at 7,000 miles. I run synthetic motor oil, which I used to change every 7,000 miles. I just rotated the tires at the same time. I got lazy last year and only changed oil every 10,000 miles, so the tires have begun wearing unevenly. (But handling never suffered.) With rotations every 5,000-7,000 miles, these tires wore beautifully and looked like new two years after purchase.

If I didn't have a new suspension to pay for, I might opt for the Goodyears. However, I still want rock rails, tranny skid, etc. It's always something. :D

I had mine on for roughly 50k and they were still going strong when I sold the Jeep. My only complaint was that they did get pretty loud as they wore. Anyone else have that problem? Even with the tread 2/3rd's gone they had great wet traction.

Thanks for the report.

If you’re buying a matching spare (which you should), then you can start doing a 5 tire rotation. The 5 tire rotation will further increase the mileage on your set of tires, plus you are keeping all 5 tires matched. If you choose to do a 5 tire rotation, then I would look at 3,000 - 4,000 mile change intervals. Which motor oil are you using?

I have over 10,000 miles on my set now, and they still look new. Still have very deep tread. The rim protectors have been awesome especially on days when I park along the curb. I'm about to take them on another offroad trip during the Labor Day weekend and I expect that they will still bite hard in the dirt, gravel, and mud.

However, they ARE loud. Mine are particularly loud between 30-35 MPH...at which speed they become downright annoying. It's hard to argue with them for a truck/SUV tire though. There is nothing they don't excel at...and they are priced low.

Yesterday I was T-boned by a teen driver hard enough to lift the rear end of my Jeep. I pulled over and expected to see major damage. Her front bumper hit squarly on my right rear tire and her license plate bracket was ripped off and deep corkscrew gouge and black swatch ran the length of her bumper. My General Grabber AT2 and Cragar soft 8 took the full brunt of the impact since it is a wide tire/rim with less backspacing and sticks out past the fender.

There was no damage to my tire or rim. Not even much of a scuff on the sidewall. Testament to the sidewall strength of the tire and the strength of the steel rim.

I have 2 questions about the Generals:

1. Tirerack.com says: Not Rated For Severe Snow. Are these tires bad at all in the snow?
2. I was thinking of getting a new set of 245/70/16 either the BFG AT or Bridgestone Revo 2. Now I see the Generals and everyone has good things to say about them...which out of the 3 would you guys recommend for a daily driver Liberty?

Some sizes are snow rated, others aren't, which I could never figure out. My 245/70r16's are exceptional in the snow.

They are pretty similar to the bfg's but a lot cheaper. I ran both on my KJ. No experience with the Revo's.

Did you notice any noticeable difference between BFG & General?

I always wanted the BFG but because of price and the weight of each BFG tire I was leaning towards the Revo. Now I'm thinkng maybe I should go with the Generals. How are Generals for every day driving? I don't do any off roading.

The BFG and General are very similar. If I had to pick one I think the General has slightly better on road manners. They do get loud though as they wear.

However, if you never go off road both are overkill and the Revo might be a better call. Check out the Firestone Destination AT. I have heard nothing but good things about them as an on road all terrain and are cheaper than the Revo.

I wasn't impressed with my Revo's, but I had the older style. I would go with the Generals or Destinations.

Generals for off road traction, more aggressive look, and deep snow. Probably tougher too.

Destination AT for smooth, quiet ride.

Have you looked at the Tirerack.com all terrain survey and reviews.? A ton of info on both tires and the Revo. The Destinations are the highest rated all terrain.

I love my Generals, they were a good deal, and wear like iron. Unstoppable in the snow. However, now that I have a sixty mile highway commute I will go with something quieter next time. The drone gets annoying.

I have the Flowmaster exhaust/K&N intake setup and it's a loud ride so I don't think I would be able to hear the drone and doubt it would bother me. Yes, I did check out Tirerack and that's where I always buy my tires. I read nothing but good reviews about the Generals that's why I think I'm leaning towards purchasing them plus the price is right.

If noise (and maybe a little lost mpg) is not an issue, definitely go for the Generals.

I agree 100%. The General Grabber AT2 is an EXCELLENT tire. They ride smooth, protect the wheels, and bite hard in ALL conditions. Most sizes are severe snow rated, and they are studdable. They are tough as nails too. All around, it's probably the best truck/SUV tire you can buy for the money.

However, if you spend 99% of your time on the road I would recommend going with the Firestone Destination AT. Reason why is because the Generals are heavy and they are loud. For a mostly on road AT tire, the Firestone is where it's at. The road noise with the Generals (especially between 30-35 MPH) is really getting on my nerves some... as is the extra weight and rolling resistence of the General which zaps fuel economy.

Is the M+S rating different from "severe snow"? I'm pretty sure my older 245/70-R16 have "M+S" stamped on the sidewall. As for my personal experience with Grabber AT2's in snow, I've found them to be as capable as I needed for the last four winters on roads covered with 3 to 12 inches of snow (4HI, 4LO) and 2- to 3-foot drifts (4LO). I run an open differential with no limited slip or lockers.

I haven't gone wheeling in the snow, but I imagine you'd want a good, dedicated mud tire like Wrangler MT/R or similar with bigger lugs for that kind of terrain.

Plus you want alot of ground clearance and massive amounts of HP for massive amounts of wheel spin and you do not want the D30A for snow bashing.
