If it came on once than it shouldn't be a clutch problem. The computer won't turn the clutch on unless the low side pressure is above 30 psi and the high side pressure is below 450 psi. An overcharge or undercharge could easily cause these pressures to be off. I would take it back to your service station and have them check the pressures.

You can't lubricate the clutch however if the electromagnet is functioning and the gap between the clutch and the pulley is too great, the clutch won't contact the pulley enough to turn the compressor. But it did a couple times which makes me think pressures which can vary depending on ambient temp.

I am by no means an expert. However, I had a similar problem. Mine would come on for a bit and then go off. Especially if it was warmer out. The way that I figured the clutch needed to be replaced was to crank up the a/c until it quit working. Pop the hood and with the butt end of a screw driver give the clutch a smack in a clockwise direction. The clutch then would pop on. This is how I knew it was the clutch and not a relay. Like I said I am no expert with a/c units but this worked well for me. I replaced the clutch and she works like a dream again.

My clutch would work more than not sometimes. Sometimes it just didnt work. Had success when I jumped the low pressure switch on top of the accumulator tank near the firewall. Changed the switch but with no result. Then I suspected an improper charge. After evacuation and proper charge same thing. Checked sensor connections and found the low pressure switch i had jumped with a small fork terminal shoved into the harness side was still allowing the clutch to stay on properly. One of the two small female spade terminals in the connector was wider than the other. Pinched it back down tight and have had no problems since.
So check your connections.

I was having a similar problem to this and my issue turned out to be the connection to the sensor located between the battery and the turbo hose. This sensor/transducer http://www.jeepair.com/air-conditioning ... r-2008.php . I thought I was going to have to spend big bucks on a new compressor but I just wiggled the wires with the A/C on and voila, the compressor and electric fan came back on and stayed on! I ordered a new transducer to be safe and the A/C is working fine after a few weeks.
