When hitching up my boat (21' I/O ~3,600 lbs.) to my '06, 56K miles CRD the rear sags pretty low. The hitch has a 1" drop due to the spare tire. The sag and drop make the front of the trailer pretty low and makes it difficult to drive on/off the trailer on the flat ramps.

So....

What do you guys think would be the best, most cost effective solution?

Thanks! Mike

Sometimes I have to use an adustable ball mount so that the ball sits higher to allow for the droop with the trailer attached.

Technically speaking you should be using a trailer leveling device anyway with that amount of weight....so that would eliminate the problem altogether.

Are you talking something like these:

What do they do to the ride?

how often do you tow the boat around? you could take your spare tire off and put it the back for now, use a straight ball if you already have one.

In the summer time, couple of times a week. Don't have to go far as there is a ramp in the neighborhood. A couple of times a year, we take it on boating trips that the drive could be a couple of hours. I see your point. Easy solution. I could just flip the ball to the other side and make it a 1" riser. I am worried about the longer trips though.

What about the air bags? Any experience?

no personal experiance with air bag suspension, i know its starts to get kind of expensive if you want to have on board air, and then you have to run air lines and power to the compressor, and gauges, its a lot of work, but if you have the extra cash laying round and the time to install it then go for it, it will def. benefit you, less strain on the factory suspension.

Jeepjeepster and danoid both run airbags (danoid has a huge trailer)
but Jeepster does more photos.

Kind of on topic, I have a GMC Envoy with airshocks and it is AMAZING. I don't have huge trailors, but it auto levels out the load. I tried toing my stuff with the CRD and I get pulled all over the road. I too have taken the spare off for everthing.

taking the spare off seems like the quickest and easiest way to get around spending a couple hundred dollars on an air suspension or those ugly looking add a leaf kits. although if you have the money i would def. get the air bags with the on-board air :D

I understand squats are good for sagging rear ends.

Ok, not one to tolerate a sagging bum, I order a Firestone airbag kit. $80 bucks, shipped. The install was easy, threaded airline through frame rail to back bumper. Put in to fill valves. I pumped the bags to 23 pounds (range is 5 to 35) and the back end lifted an inch or so. I rode around, and except for larger jolts, it was virually undetectable. With the boat on; nice and level.

These things seem to be very inexpensive and a good solution. Just my two cents.

OME HD kit go on ahead and lift it and get it out of the way and with the HD coils and shocks you won't even tell that boat is back there plus 1.5" looks nice on the KJ.

I am with you on the lift. Seeing how easy it was to remove the springs, should be no trouble. The Discovery II took nearly 1/2 day. BTW, I just sold my A6.
