I extended all of my breathers during my sentence in FL since there's a lot deep water there. My rear diff is extended up to the filler door, all of my other breathers are extended to the fire wall with a loop in the so the look like a "6". I bought all the parts at NAPA.

5/16 ID hose, get 4 barbed couplings and 20 ft of gas hose to add to the existing hose and use the original end fittings on the new end. No hose clamps needed.

IIRC, I think extending the breathers would be the same on KJ and KK. I referenced the KJ write-ups when I did mine on my KK (http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=104&t=44164.

Hope it goes, or has went, well.

I have to agree with using hose clamps here. I think it makes much better sense & security to replace the existing lines, as they can be weathered and dry, and can crack. That is a typical way to get water into the components in question. I say it is not worth cutting the corners.

Going on this information alone, I took a trip to the hardware store, purchased said items, did my front and rear axles in about an hour. Rear axle is now vented at the gas fill, and the front goes up to the top of the firewall....(if I get water in them now, I have plenty of other things to worry about).....

The one advantage I did see to doing this is the fact that the marginal grade factory hose was looking spent, weather worn, and starting to crack.

As for the transmission and transfer case, working on my back at ground level I could feel the hose and connection on the T-case, but couldn't access it, didn't even look for the one on the transmission....going to have to get her up on a lift to do those two......

So, I've opted to just extend the breathers vs. replacing them

I'll probably do that with the T-case and tranny Jayme, replacing the axles was easy, but I believe to do that with the T-case and tranny will require putting the Libby up in the air.....

I did one of them today without having to hoist the jeep off the ground - not sure which one it was.

If you follow your transmission filler/dipstick tube down along the firewall, there's another breather there. Not sure which it is, but I extended that one. I'm also not sure how difficult it will be for you guys to access that one... it was plenty 'fun' for me to get it, and I even have smaller hands...

One more to go. I just have to find it.

What did you use to sleeve the two hoses together Jayme.....?

I'm thinking a piece of copper tubing with an O.D. of 5/16" and a pair of hose clamps.....

lowes/home depot both carry a big variety of those brass type and the pvc type in white and black plastic, not real sure what the diff is on those plastic types, maybe heat or oil resistance? no idea

any hardware store should carry them, they're common stuff, i used brass on one plastic on the other simply cause it was all i had in my junk box

not a bad idea to replace the hose(s) when you do it either

I don't understand something here guys, why exactly are you bothering to extend your breathers? Do you do really deep an long water fording? Do you really think all that much water will leak back down the stock breather locations? They're mounted pretty high.

I do know of a couple of guys who do deep water. They have snorkels and don't care about water about their feet (believe me when I say that a Libby isn't water tight). They've extended their breathers into the snorkel.

The function of the breathers is to allow air in the diffs & transfer case (maybe the transmission too) to expand & contract and I doubt very much water could make it's way down the breather hoses. You're likely going to get more water in your diff's & transfer case from leaking seals.

I think what happens is the fluid is hot (expands) and when you enter the water the case and fluid cools off pretty quickly (contracts) and this is when water can be sucked into the diff. etc.

The length that the factory extends these breathers is for most sufficiently high enough, however the quality of hose used by the factory does weather and start to break down after several years of contamination by road salt, and all the other harmful things mixed in rain water on the road. So it's not a bad idea to replace them after 5 or 6 years. For me there's a little more significance to replacing and extending my breathers, living on low laying ocean front barrier island that see's several tidal floods a year, and due to my employment as a fire fighter, it sometimes happens that I'm forced to drive through deep salt water to either get to work, or to get home after my shift. Not something I like to do since it is salt water, but you do what you gotta do, then flush generously with fresh water afterwards.
Water in the axles is bad enough, salt water in the axles is like herpes, the gift that keeps on giving.....
