Have tried the adjustable wrench smacked with small sledge approach. . . for over an hour. I did what GDE suggested and put some penetrating lube on the nut. That was a mistake. It simply lubed the belt to pulley surface making it turn even more easily.

I tried wedging a pry bar behind the pulley. I tried driving a piece of hardwood behind it.

The location doesn't seem like a good place to apply heat.

Any suggestions?

Use with a air hammer, takes seconds to loosen or tighten, works wonders and worth the $160 for the kit.

There are other kits that use a holder instead of a air hammer also, some cheaper and some more expensive. If you know what size the clucth nut is you can get that one size and the holder for less the $75.

Some auto parts store have a tool loaner program. Get it loose and give it back. Never tried the air hammer one. One slip and you can be through the radiator or worst. :dizzy: The fan clutch kit is 2 wrench deal, one to hold the pulley and another to break loose the nut. You can even use a long 1/2 breaker bar on the end of the wrench.

Can't slip with the air hammer attachment ones, your more prone to slipping with the 2 wrench manual kind and 10x's the work.

I'm not sure you could fit an air hammer in a CRD.I can barely get my hands in there.

I'm right there with ya brother. I did find that you can force a long screw driver...the 12" Craftsman variety with the 1/4" slot tip and have it pinned by the engine lift point. I gave up on the project for now as I am at my parents' house 400 miles from my residence. I decided I'd be better off to break it up there than down here wher I'd have to borrow a vehicle and then come back and get it.

I also tried jamming a piece of wood or a sufficiently small/large socket between the fan pulley and idler pully. With my belt already being lubricated, it didn't do much to hold it.

I had to make both wrenches. Could not find a pinned spanner to buy or rent to hold the pulley as shown in the FSM, so I made that one. Then I rented a Clutch Fan wrench set from Advanced Auto and the thinly made wrench just sprung open, so I had to make that wrench out of 3/8" steel with a long bar handle on it so I could strike it with a hammer to loosen the clutch.
Geeze, if an air hammer will fit that would be great, but you still need to hold the pulley. It was tight! Oh yea, I had to buy the damaged wrench set.

If anyone is wondering, a 1-7/16" wrench fits the nut. It was probably intended to be metric, and this could be one of the sizes that overlaps.

And I came to the same conclusion...gonna have to build that special wrench to hold the pulley so that can I wail on fan nut.

I'm planning on leaving the thing off. But if I put it back on, it's going to have a good layer of anti-sieze applied to make disassembly easier in the future.

Good luck on getting that off man!!! I'm rooting for you!

Once you do, there is an alternative to leaving it off...should you like to have a fan just in case you need to drive up hills or tow anything...i

Fixed Flex Fan (FFF).

P.S. you can unscrew the 4 bolts on the adapter to remove the fan w/o having to unscrew the big nut part if you have the Fixed Flex Fan mod. Not to mention the fixed fan will never go out like a fan clutch. :) Far superior cooling, easy maintenance.

A flex fan modification makes sense and is in my future mod.

No reason to buy any tools. The right box wrench, bolt and nut is all you need (plus a big crescent wrench and a big hammer).
