Ok put an injector in, took two tries to get it seated but ultimately did with no vapor black or white coming out of the hole. Checked and tightened the fittings (had a couple leakers) but overall now it is running very well.

Bad news is I am still getting diesel smell and cant quite figure it out. It could be old diesel soaked into the firewall insulation but it just smell to hot for that (this vehicle had alot of diesel on the engine and manifold ALOT.

Any thoughts? Could it be the return line, it looks intact.

If it's running alright, I would take it to a carwash and clean the engine off real good. I don't think diesel will burn off the engine but will smell like a well season cast iron frying pan.

Will probably take a while to burn off all the saturation. as long as you are don't see any obvious leaks, you are probably good.

Cleaned the engine compartment. Guess I will wait and see, they have the intake down near the engine compartment so its sucking off any vaporizing fuel that could be anywhere, and trust me this puppy dumped a pile of fuel.

Cleaned it again, this time with an orange sol like cleaner and some deoderizore. Smells like cleaning solution now, see if the diesel smell comes back.

I really suspect a small weep in a line, however the smell has been declining the last few days so..............

Runs fine,

Found a hair of a turn on the fuel line onto the injector that I installed, didnt have a line wrench when I tightened it. Went and got one and got three good nudges, hopefully that was it, definately where it was weeping just a "wee" bit.

At up to 20k PSI in that line... Even the slightest not-tight-enough will allow an amazing amount of leakage out. Much of that leakage will be in extremely small micro-droplets or mist, that can cause the fuel to go right through your skin, should you have reached across the flow with the engine running. That was probably your source.

Ugh, seems to be coming back could still be old diesel but not thinking so.

What could I be missing, all fittings are tight to the point of no movement. Could I have some other problem on the EGR side I didnt know about that would give what I can only describe as a "musty hot" diesel smell.

CAC hoses are good.

Leave it running while inspecting around the injectors, but use an old piece of brown cardboard as a probe - NOT your fingers. The cardboard will get wet from the diesel if there is any outspray... But I will say that I seem to remember my Jetta's SOAKED engine blanket (drained more than a gallon from it) smelled like diesel for a very long time after. On the order of the entire summer.

Did that no sign of any leaks or vapor, has stopped smelling in the cab but still under the hood.

I lost alot of fuel under the hood so it may just have that much soaked in even after a degreasing.

There is probably a ton of it soaked into the sound deadening on the firewall. Have you dropped the front skid plate and taken out that sound deadening blanket that's on top of it? Could be soaked too.
