I'm a total automotive and jeep newbie. I've got a 2007 Liberty Sport 4x4. Purchased used in 2008. I'm looking at maintenance recommendations in the owner's manual and for Rear Axle Differential Fluid it says "Models equipped with Trac-Lok require a limited-slip additive." Elsewhere in the manual, it describes Trac-Lok as an option.

How do I determine whether or not I have Trac-Lok? If the answer involves me looking at the mechanical stuff under the car, please be descriptive in a way that makes sense to this non-mechanic.

Green sticker on the passenger side rear axle, + 2 metal tags on the rear diff cover. However I don't believe Trac-Lok was available on 06-07, but I could be wrong.

No green stickers. No metal tags. It's pretty much a stock base model, so that doesn't surprise me. Thanks for the quick reply.

After looking over the manual and making a spreadsheet for the recommended maintenance, I can see I really ought to be getting grease and grime on my hands more often! LOL I'm looking forward to learning what I should have learned 20 years ago!

It's really not that hard to do either, just take your time.

One tip that can save you grief when you're changing fluids: Make sure you can remove the fill plug before you drain it. Nothing worse than realizing AFTER you've drained the fluid out that you can't put new fluid in. That's not a problem with the rear diff, which has a rubber plug, but it could be with the front. Also, a pump like this one is very handy.

quick way to determine if your vehicle has a limited slip, or locking dif is to -

1- jack vehicle up
2- spin tire by hand
3- look at tire on other side of dif. if it spins the opposite direction, its open, that means it has no traction aid. If it spins the same direction your spinning the tire, then your lucky and have a traction aid.

also, my opinion don't go crazy with the gear lube, synthetic gear oil is crazy expensive and if you frequently change your oils, just stick with the dyno lube.
