One difference that is apparent, or was until fairly recently - between US and Euro petrol engines, is the power output. US engines seem to put out less power for a given size than the Euro engines.

Less emission standards oversea's then in the US.If comparing gas to gas Euro vehicles are far smaller and lighter then ones in the US,we don't like small vehicles very much and to many safety standards in the US also that add alot of extra weight.Just think a '84 Ford Escort get's better mpg's then a '10 Honda Fit.

Just to update the original post...

The VW 2.0L PD engine has been replaced. Available for future models will be the Fiat 2.0L Common Rail engine. Euro5 compliant.

Mercedes OM651 (2.2L) will not be used on any other models and will be phased out.

The VM RA428 in the RT (minivan) is only 120kW/360nm. Limitation due to induction system and transmission (62TE isn't a good gearbox).

The Mercedes OM642 3.0L has been replaced. Available in future models will be the VM 3.0L A630 V6.

I'm not sure the official output ratings have been released for the new engines, but it's considerably higher than the outgoing engines.

x2, glad to see the Brits actually have an entertaining show. I loved the sarcasm. Too bad we couldn't have PBS shows like that here.
