I'll get flak for this one

But you are correct,Ford is going light years ahead with there direct injection gas engines.Powerful and very fuel efficient at the same time.

You mean like Audi has been doing for years with the FSI engines?

Mercedes did direct gasoline injection years ago (1950s) with an inline Bosch pump, but never put it into production at that time it was too complicated to get the mixture right. A few years later they went to multi port gasoline injection with a Bosch inline pump. I worked on a 280s with the mechanical gasoline injection.

Ford is just catching up, but making a wise move.

And how GM has been doing in turbocharged European market engines before Audi started it?

You're all behind the times. Hesselman pioneered the Gasoline Direct Injection concept on his truck engines way back in 1925. The first successful GDI engines were found on numerous WW2 aircraft. In 1955, the MB 300-SL used direct gasoline injection. Ford manufactured 100 Proco Crown Vics back in the 70s. In 96 Mitsubishi introduced it's line of GDI engines. In 97 Nissan did the same. 98 Toyota, 99 Renault, 2000 Volkswagen/Audi. In 2001 Ford introduced it's production 1.1 liter, 3 cylinder, turbocharged SCI line of engines. In 2002 Alfa Romeo, 2003 BMW. In 2004 GM began a huge roll-out of GDI engines across it's whole spectrum of brands. 2005 Mazda. In 2009 even Ferrari and Porsche began to use the Stratified charge technology.

In no case is GDI technology more efficient than diesel, nor will it ever be. More power per pound of engine yes, but more efficient, no.

The failure in that logic (That gas could EVER be more efficient than diesel) is in forgetting that diesel naturally has 30% more energy per unit than gas. The same kind of anti-logic was used by the 'hydrogen future of the transport sector' fools during Bush's term. What they did do... Wrote themselves massive grants and continued funding, for a pie-in-the-sky idea where even the scientists working on it knew that the public would NEVER go for something with such a low energy density as to offer single-digit fuel economy... And a nasty propensity to go BOOM in a crash because the fuel tank is under 4000 psi.

Well with the way my CRD is acting as of late, maybe a Mahindra is the answer for me. I just wanted a 4WD with 20+mpg and towing. The CRD I have has 64K on it, and this summer is not starting hot! That being it is not overheated either. No clickty-click or nothing. Strange. Only happens when it has been running, and the ambient outdoors temp is 80 degrees F or more.
Everything else is good on it, just afraid to start 'hot'. :furious:

Air in fuel? Fuel head leaks? Did you ever try to prime it first and see if it would help? Did you ever check the Map sensor?

Oops not turning over, forget what I said.

What units are you talking about? It sure doesn't seem to be by volume, and I would think the weights are very similar as well.

Efficiency and MPG are similar but not necessarily the same thing. Or rather efficiency is normally the maximum efficiency of the engine over its entire operating range. The MPG is normally using an rpm that is not at the maximum efficiency range of the motor.

Efficiency is only a part of the issue, MPG and emissions are going to play a much larger role in the near future, being dominated by emissions, which is an area that I don't think diesels will be able to keep up with, due to their higher combustion temperatures.

Just my thoughts on the subject.

Mahindra is one of the largest automakers in the world. They are also the #1 selling agricultural tractor in the United States (according to their own literature). I have faith that they build a solid product. It's not reliability that scares me away from this pickup truck.... it's the appearance. Gawd...that thing is ugly as he11. Looks like a 1978 Toyota gone wrong.

The zombie apocalypse has already started. It's claimed all the brains at EPA, CARB, and upper management at most automobile manufacturers. Just be careful and don't get bitten...

The makeup of both gasoline and diesel is different as well. Gasoline is typically C9H20, while diesel fuel is typically C14H30. The increase in carbon and hydrogen atoms is the reason the energy density of diesel is greater as well. On average, 1 gallon (3.8 L) of diesel fuel contains approximately 155x106 joules (147,000 BTU), while 1 gallon of gasoline contains 132x106 joules (125,000 BTU).

Here is a great article on Gas vs. Diesel. Thermal efficiencies, torque and HP differences and causes are discussed in an easy straight forward way. Enjoy...
