Engine Died. . . Short to Ground?

Engine died while driving. . . . abruptly. Many fault codes:

P2295--fuel pressure solenoid short to ground
P1295--vacuum solenoid short to ground
P0091--fuel quantity solenoid short to ground
P0047--turbocharger boost pressure solenoid short to ground
p0670--glow plug controller circuit malfunction

Before I read the codes, I was thinking fuel filter. Anything look familiar?

Check the Battery. Battery starting to fail can cause some very strange codes.

Eliminate the variable of the battery terminals and cables being the cause of the problem first.

Here is an easy and inexpensive way to eliminate this variable.

First clean the battery posts and copper strand in the cables using a wire brush to bring back that brand new shine on the battery connectors and also brush off the white powder, if any, from the terminals.

Battery corrosion Spray cleaner works great to dissolve the corrosion quickly.

If the cables show signs of corrosion in between the copper strands, allow the spray solution to soak in between them for a while.

In order to clean all of the corroded copper strands, you will need to splice back the rubber cover until you reach clean copper, and soak the corrion with the solution.... Spray, brush, and let dry.

Reseal the spliced rubber around the copper cables with auto electrical tape or liquid electrical tape.

My local Wal-Mart had the battery cleaner and both types of electrical tape.

If the terminals and cables are real bad, then you will need to replace them.

This worked for me and eliminated the need for a new battery untill it really dies.

Over 5 years now on the original Optima battery.

Good advice. I'm going to work on it now. It's about a block away parked at an Autozone. I coasted it in last night.

I'm going to have them check the battery. The cables look like new, but will check them out. I'm also going to put a fuel filter on it. Won't have any effect on electronics, but could be part of problem of engine just dying.

Hopefully it's the battery,but if not shine a flashlight around your harness looking for a tear in the wires.Shaggyislandboy had serious skins in his harness close to where it passes through the firewall.

Check the large harness running from the top rear of the engine to behind the fuel filter head mounting bracket. On the 06 expecially, I think they raised the bracket, the bracket has a rolled edge where the wire goes behind but on the 06 the wiring bundle is slightly lower and hits the sharp edge cutting the harness :dead:

I spent the whole day messing around with the CRD. Put a new fuel filter on it and did my best to check for any wire breaks. No luck.

It seems something really is grounded out. After I erase the codes, it starts retesting immediately and pulls up the same stuff. Usually, I get a code 'pending' but it doesn't just spit them out all over again.

Joe, I had already checked that bundle. It looks very tight and clean.

I'm going to call around the various diesel services in town (Ogden, UT) to try to find someone to look at it. If that doesn't happen there is no recourse other than the dealer, and that is about the last thing I want.

And, I'm leaving the battery out of it for the night. Does that really reset the PCM on Libertys? It seems to on older TJ's.

Please take your battery to Autozone or another parts store with a free battery tester and have them test the battery under a load ("stress test"). Same issue in reverse, it would take a trickle code but would kick off the charger and throw a code if it went over 20AMP charge rate. My battery worked "fine" until you shocked it during a start, glow-plugs, fan, lights, etc. My red top lasted for three years but the last 4 months were painful, experiencing several quirks along the way (Drop it in drive and the dome lights come on? Can't make this :furious:

up). I put in an oversized Die-Hard AGM and it has held up for ~30k miles and two winters thus far (so far it has gone three months being charged every night thanks to my lack of an alternator due to a lack of a water pump :banghead:

LOL. Autozone did test it after the guy said Optimas should not be load tested. ??? Battery cables in great shape. Took it to a small town dealer today. I chatted with the mechanic who will look at it next Tuesday (long weekend). He seemed like a reasonable guy and neither he nor the service writer tried to blow smoke up my arse. I'm am thinking I should pray for him.

While waiting on my water pump, the tensioner on the serpentine went bad and knocked out my alternator :dead:

for the second time in the Jeep's life.

Now that I have all of my parts, my diesel/foreign car mechanic is swapping out all of the parts for the 100k routine...I just get (to) fork(ed) over additional $ for another alternator thanks to the geniuses at DCX.
