I know of a local guy here that put a cummins engine in a '97 TJ I think it may have been a 4BT also. he said it was a 2.9L 4 banger though. it was a Cummins engine and I did see it and hear it run. he had some gearing issues at first but now claims it running great.

Those things are heavy and VERY loud! They're old tech tractor motors... Good luck with that.

But at least they will putlast the 2.8 CRD by a wide margin, cheaper to fix also and owning stock in Loc-tite will make you rich.

I wheeled in MOAB with a guy who was running a buggy with a 3.9 liter Cummins (4BT). You couldnt hold a conversation as long as the engine was on! It was say louder than the same year 6BT you find in Dobidge trucks.

Just by nature 4 cylinders are noisier then a 6 cylinder, more vibs also to deal with.

2 main issues here.
1- The 4BT is a tall motor. Lots of oilpan and a L O N G stroke.
2- No way will the IFS hold up to the weight

And yes...they are noisy but as simple as they come with GOBS of low end! I have run these motors to nearly 1,000,000 miles!

Well so much for the 4BT swap, he informed me yesterday he found a great deal on a 3.7 with only 31k on it, $300 sounds like a deal to me too!
