I've only seen that once. Old Detroit genset that ran away. I hope this is an isolated incident.
Sorry for your loss. Everything on this engine seems to be made of unobtainium. I can't believe the parts avaliability is this bad.

I will say this much..

There is NO WAY IN **** I would spend $7 grand to fix that Jeep. My father saw a CRD Sport for sale here the other day for $8,400. Once you get to $7 grand...you are way too close to buying another complete Jeep to make the engine repair worth it, in my opinion.

Google parts for Mercruiser 2.8 diesel. Then look at the price for fuel injection pump! (I will give you a hint...$7K-8K). We need to befriend someone across either pond for parts.

guys,
I just replaced the engine in a CRD shortly after the timing belt was replaced and it was a real learning experience. One cam shaft moved on the cam drive gear and #1 piston kissed the head totally destroying the head and piston. Root cause was improper torque on the camshaft gear bolt.
I am in Nova Scotia and did not have much choice in engine supply, I could have repaired the engine for half the cost of replacement but it would have taken time to locate the parts and I needed the vehicle back.
Sometimes it hurts like hell but scrapping the vehicle was not really an option either: 2006 CRD, 105,000KM
Good luck

Can anybody explain how this "piston stretch" occurs?
I have never heard of this and cannot think of any mechanism that would cause this.
Unless the wrist pin bent/broke but that seems unlikely.

If you want to get parts for this engine go to this link. https://www.jeepoemparts.com/2005-jeep- ... parts.html
The piston, connecting rod, and sleeve should be around $400.00. I would just order the parts and repair it myself. Many shops including dealers don't want to mess with potential comebacks. They don't repair or rebuild anymore, they just replace. It is easier and more profitable for them. Good luck. Hope this helps. I have 110,000 miles on my 05 with no mods. I replaced the timing belt myself for about $400 in parts. It was surprisingly easy. The only problem I have is if I overfill the rear diff even slightly it blows out the pinion seal.

Ya I'm not sure why you cannot get the parts unless they are just backordered. About a year ago I looked up a number of parts for a guy in africa who had an engine needing pistons and stuff, just called up with the part numbers and got the costs.

Also, the cheapest engine I see listed is for $2200, I guess you would need to get it shipped, but that still pretty cheap compared to these other prices, and might even be comparable to getting the parts and labor done for yours.

Usually by overspeeding the engine. Float the valves and the piston starts kissing them. I'm amazed his was still running.

that is not really piston stretching, but more the valve springs don't have enough spring pressure to keep the valves following the cam shaft profile at high rpms, correct?

Or is piston stretching the name for a valve train error? :?:

That is how you stretch the wrist pin holes. The piston hits something at high speed...
Diesels typically have almost zero clearence in the combustion chamber. Float a valve just a little and you have contact.

That would imply an extremely high RPM event, well past redline. And an "inch" of play implies breakage, not "stretch".

Even with our relatively "light" valve train, valve float should never occur below 4000 RPM.
If the piston crashed into the valves, the valves and rockers would show damage.

Something else is going on here.
I don't believe that a piston or wristpin can easily bend or stretch.
Connecting rods do stretch. Usually occurs under rapid deceleration from a high RPM with high vacuum.
And they almost always stretch at the bottom end at the cap bolts.

So maybe what the tech is calling "piston stretch" is actually rod stretch?

Unless someone out there can find a connecting rod and a piston for the #2 hole and do the rebuild I'm about to have to buy a new motor...ANYBODY?
ACTUALLY...if I can get the connecting rod, piston, gasket set...I got a machine shop that will do the machine work for $1,200 OR cheaper....ANYBODY?

What exactly is a "stretched piston?" I'm with UFO here. I wouldn't trust ANY Chrysler dealer to correctly diagnose that the SUN was going to come up tomorrow.

Tell us what the symptoms were, and 99% of the time we will be able to tell you what REALLY happened, and how to fix it for (most likely) a LOT less than a new engine.

Take it from me, I have been one of only 2 or three people to lose the engine on these CRDs. The engine is a tough beast, it doesn't fail politely. If the engine truly was bad / gone... You wouldn't need Chrysler to BS you about it, you would already know.

I lost a engine in my 05 @125k miles piston went sideways no idea how it happen . would not turn over, was about 100 miles after TB change, I blam it on the dealer , but cannot prove it the belt was in tack cost me 8k it get it back on the road

FANTASTIC....thanks guys...I went to that site and the search says they have the 4 connecting rods for $460 bucks...fantastic...I guessing around $3K for the rebuild total now instead of the reman for $7,400 with the dealer...YIPPEE.
Now I have to confirm the parts at the 800 number Monday and confirm the rebuild with my machine shop...
hell yea...HELL YEA.....THANKS GUYS....
I'll let you know how it all comes out...

Now that I have a source for parts and a machine shop to do the engine work.
How about a mechanic with experience and credentials that will come here and finish doing the pull out and the engine return.
ANYBODY??? :juggle:
