Canon have range of lenses for cheaper and Nikon has the motor in the lenses for the cheaper models so once you get to D90 and up, the motor is in the body which allows you to get older lenses that have not motor for auto focusing.

If you want, you should look at the Rebel XSi, good starter camera or the Nikon D5000...another brand to look at is Sony, probably the BEST lenses out there IMO.

I have yet to buy one, but I currently have 3 Nikor lenses so I am leaning on the D300 or D90. But just for the body, and they are about $900.

Remember that Canon and Nikon are up there competition wise. They don't really have much of a EQUAL camera, they one up each other. So if you look at a canon and nikon, it is likely that their will be a canon/nikon that is just above or just below it.

Another thing to throw out there, make sure you check how heavy they are ( i would not get any plastic bodys, can break, light can get let into them if the plastic warps. So get the full metal bodys for BEST long lasting camera.

Both the Canon and Nikon DSLR lines have full options of lenses filter equipment etc etc etc prices are pretty comparable too.

I have a Canon, if for no other season than I have always had Canon's.


I had an old film SLR, then I got a 300D(aka rebel first digital SLR priced under $1000, but just barely), just recently I got a 500D/T1i. I got the 300D because I had my equipment for the film rebel, I got the 500D because I had all my equipment and lenses for the 300D. Basically whichever brand you end up going with you will stick with because you have equipment that keeps carrying over.

I got the body only version of this kit around new years, the kit linked includes a pretty decent starter lens(with image stabilization).

I'm surprised no one has mentioned ergonomics. (Well, actually, not all that surprised, now that I think about it). If you can get to a camera shop that will let you try them out, you might find that one brand feels a lot more comfortable in your hand and has more intuitive controls. That can make a huge difference in your purchase satisfaction.

You will take great pics with either brand. I wouldn't worry about image quality from brand to brand, that's way more about the operator than the equipment. But be confident about your choice before you sink a lot of money into it. You might start off slow, but before you know it Gear Acquisition Syndrome kicks in (no matter how much you fight it) and you'll have thousands of dollars worth of lenses and accessories. You don't want to get to that point and decide you like the other brand better.

I've sunk all my cash into Nikon, so if you have any Nikon questions, I can probably answer them.

Like it has been said above, Canon and Nikon are nearly brothers in the camera game. I agree with those above that you should definitely try out the cameras and see what you like for how they handle and feel. The best advice I can give you without being too biased are these websites:

Out of everything I do, these websites I check daily. I would recommend you stay away from Sony, due to the non-standard flash foot. I feel that if a company has to usurp the industry standard and go their own way, it only harms their users. They may have great glass, but again Sony's proprietary tendencies turn a lot of pro's away.

I myself am a Canon shooter, just because its what I went with when I started 3 years ago. I love my white lenses and probably will never switch. One thing to especially do is read up on The Digital Picture regarding lens recommendations and use. He's started doing Nikon reviews but has every Canon item in inventory. Both manufactures have lenses that may be slightly different, but by reading the Canon recommendations you can then lookup the comparable Nikon lens.

congrats on the purchase, you'll love the DSLR. i've had the Nikon D300 since it came out new, and LOVE IT!!! i was going to suggest Nikon for a few reasons, but since you've made your purchase, i'm sure you will be pleased be pleased. they are both (nikon/canon) very good cameras no doubt!!!!
