Hey ive read that the EHM can freeze up during snowy, winter conditions. Im in canada so our winters are brutal. From what ive read on the provent, they seem to have similar problems.

What do you guys do come winter time?

Thanks

I never had problems with the EHM in the winter, the Provent on the other hand was a PITA! the filter media it was constantly freezing up and blowing hoses off. I was worried about the engine seals, removed it and built my own.

I would tune in CBC on the radio and let the Hot Air melt the ice, just kidding. When I travel in Canada I try not to listen to Radio Stations that won't advertise Tim Hortons, that weeds out all the endless garbage talk about "who gets wet when they take a shower discussions".

You may try insulating the Provent or insulate the EHM hose to prevent the vapor from freezing up.
I made my own oil separator out of 2" PVC packed with coarse steel wool and mounted it next to the radiator tank, works for me.

Take a razor blade and cut 4 slits in the end of the hose about an inch or so long. I also put a 2-3" long slit in the hose farther up where it bends over the front of the engine and goes down. That way if it does happen to plug up, it still has a place to vent.

I'm confused with the EHM once you pull the hose from the pod and run a new hose down the side of the engine..what do you with the hose that is plugged into the port net to the turbo?? the hose goes from the puck to the crank?? if you pull it from the puck and vent it do you just block off the old hose??

Pull the end of the hose off the puck on top of the engine. Plug it with a 3/4" plug and a hose clamp. Put a new hose about 5 ft long onto the puck and run the free end forward and down on the passenger side of the engine, away from moving parts and the hot turbo. Zip tie the open end somewhere where it won't flop around.

Safe bet in cold climates is to remove it in winter and go back stock. I have seen VW TDI owners blow turbo seals due to frozen EHM's that would cause pressure buildup. Weak point in TDI was the turbo seal. Not sure for the CRD but if it freezes the presuure will break through the weakest seal.

X2, I think someone gave this tip in the EHM thread. The slits are your pressure relief if it happens to freeze up. Mine has never frozen up.

Same thing I do with the original equipment EH on my 2006 Cummins ISX..... nothing. Just let it hang and do its thing. That fact that I also run a grill cover during most of the winter may make a difference.

I ran the EHM for almost 40,000 but once I got the Eco tune from Green Diesel I hooked
the hose back up. I also cover the 7 slots in front, a slight bit of oil, but no EGR
due to the EcoTune. Having been in your area snowmobiling, and seeing -40 easily,
I would cover up and get the tune, and hook it back up during the winter.
