Hello fellow CRD'ers. Thought I would introduce myself here instead of the general KJ forum, as long as that's cool.
After doing much research and sitting on the fence between various diesel vehicles, I decided to pursue a CRD seriously. With much help from the info on this forum, I finally ended up with one I'm content with, after letting a few slip through my hands. I traded in an '04 WJ 4.0L that I had put some nice mods on, and really enjoyed for the 50k+ miles I had it (might still be available for sale at the dealer near here, PM me for more info). My real motivation for making the move to diesel is to progress toward eventually running, and in the end producing, my own biodiesel. Staying with a jeep (third now: XJ, then WJ, now KJ) was a big factor too.
So to the details. It's a bright silver metallic (same color as my old WJ) '05 Sport CRD with almost 48k on the clock. The only mods I have been able to tell for sure done by the previous owner include a 2.5" spacer lift, 1.25" wheel spacers (each side), allowing for 245x75x16 Cooper discoverer a/t's. From the limited info I was able to dig up on this rig, the previous owner lived somewhere near Buena Vista, CO, but didn't put many miles on it. Not until after the sale was finalized did I find out that the turbo housing was replaced at about 44k. Any thoughts or concerns there? To the best of my (and bloodmcnally's) knowledge, the F37 was not performed. I have a pretty good handle on most things suspension wise, but independent front suspensions are new to me. I understand the drawbacks with the spacers, but hey, that didn't stop me from running them in the WJ either. Hopefully will be temporary, bigger issues to consider first. Anyone recall someone possibly from the high country of CO on here up until this summer?
Cleaned the MAF and MAP sensors the other day and was surprised to find the MAP (turbo boost pressure) sensor relatively clean compared to what I've seen here. Didn't quite seem like it had been pulled before from the looks of it either, esp given how tight the hex bolt was set, and the condition of the bolt head. Would really like to pursue a GDE tune given what I've read here, but still have some more considering to do. Does anyone have any knowledge of compatibility of the GDE tunes with running biodiesel? Didn't seem to see anyone in the alt. fuels section with that. Is there an easy way to tell if the ECM was reprogrammed earlier? I'm very suspicious with how clean the MAP sensor was.
One potential issue though is the need for emissions testing every two years (as long as I'm here at least). Whichever way I go, it would be good to be able to pass emissions if necessary. So that's where I'm at. No MPG numbers yet, not even half-way through the first tank, but looking good so far.
And oh yeah, I got the dealer to transfer the remainder of the 7/70 powertrain warranty, and added a Jeep service contract good for 5 yrs or 70k from the purchase date and mileage. The service contract can be cancelled at any time or transferred to another owner. Have to keep that in mind on anything I do, for now at least.
Any suggestions or concerns would be greatly appreciated! Thanks and happy wheelin'!
