I just replaced my rear brakes. It was very easy. The first side I did did not have the clip on top of the caliper, didn't realize it wasn't there until I saw the other side had one.

What does this clip do? Could this be the cause? The side that is grinding is the one without the clip. The brakes stop fine, but they grind at low speeds.

I just had it in for inspection, and am changing rear pads to pass. I'm thinking someone at the shop forgot to reinstall it. As soon as I got out of the Jeep after my test drive I could smell the heat from the brakes.

I also read something about the rear brakes being too tight. I torqued the caliper bolts to 25 Ft/lbs. Is that too tight????

Any suggestions? The Jeep is jacked up in my driveway at the moment and needs to be fixed by the morning.

Update:

I took the brakes apart and put more grease on the slides. Tightened the caliper bolts snug plus a quarter turn.

The grinding noise is gone as far as I could tell, but I could still smell hot brakes when I got out.

What gives???? They're just brakes, but they're kicking my booty. :x

drums can be a pita, particularly if it's your first set of drums

they'll often grind/smell/get/hot for the first 50ish miles if there is irregularity in the drum causing them to drag, once it wears in it should stop

however, if there's a clip missing, different story

i typically always buy a new hardware kit every time i do brakes which would include all of the pad sliders, replacement caliper bracket bolt boots and other environmental wear items

They're discs.

According to the service department at my local dealer the clip is just an anti-rattle clip.

I've driven maybe a mile since I did the change. My inspection is expired, and I don't need a ticket. Hopefully after I get a new sticker in the morning, I can put a few more miles on and see if they're still getting hot.

sorry just finished doing rear drums on a ranger, had drums on the brain

did this clip attach to the caliper bracket or to the back of the pads?

if it was about 3" long and attach tot he caliper bracket it's a slider clip, performs two functions, keeps the pads from rattling and makes them slide easier so that they do not get bound up due to rust on the caliper bracket

if it was a clip that fit into the recess in the caliper piston, different purpose

if the rotors had a lip towards the inner edge then that could very well be what was causing your grinding

That is an anti-rattle clip, and as far as I know, it shouldnt cause any problems NOT being there since you just replaced the pads. My New pads came with new anti rattle clips. I put the grease the pads came with on the back of the pads and on those clips. Did your pads not come with new clips? You may be able to buy just the clips, napa may sell them.

Was the caliper hard to pull off the last time you took it off to check them? Do you think its possible the caliper has coincidentally went bad causing the grinding noise and smell?

This was the first time the rear calipers have been off. I only have 43k on the Jeep. Could a caliper go bad that soon?

The clip that is missing is the one that goes on the top of the caliper and clips underneath the caliper mounts. I believe there is a picture of it on the brake how-to on this site.

time is a bigger killer than miles, particularly with the salt belt

same exact thing just happend to me. changed my pads and got a smell and heat from the passenger rear wheel. turns out the caliper was sticking and causing the pads to get HOT! $40 caliper (after core return) fixed the problem. i only have 36K on my Jeep.

I'm gonna guess that I didn't do a great job at cleaning the pads up prior to installation. Took about 25 miles worth of running errands, but I think I'm in the clear.

There's no more smell. :D
