I picked up a set of OEM skid plates for my '06 CRD and need some info on mounting them. They come with a set of inserts that go in holes in the underside of the jeep. The instructions, just pictures, no words, show that the inserts go into the holes and then you put a bolt with a sleeve into the inserts and torque to 40 pounds. What I can't figure out is what does this do. Does tightening the bolt to 40 pounds lock the sleeves into the hole? I can't see how that would work. Sorry if this seems like a stupid question but I don't want to be going down the highway and have the skid plates fall off. :dizzy:

You have to insert them with the special bolt and the serrated nut into the proper holes first, then install your skid plate. should be a plastic bag with the nut in bolt in there, instruction sheet was yellow I think? If it was not there, tell the vendor that parts were missing, especially if the package was damage in shipping.

There are two of the serrated nuts with the bolts and sleeves but there are also 6 steel inserts. The yellow instruction with the serrated nuts don't tell me much and the instructions with the skid plates don't show the serrated nuts. Am I supposed to put one of the serrated nuts in the hole and then the steel insert?

Found a mention of the inserts on another jeep forum. Apparently the inserts are supposed to collapse as the bolt is tightened. Makes since but I don't see how that would work. Just going to have to install them and see what happens.

Right, but install the inserts first, the serrated nut should be held from turning with a wrench as you torque the bolt to crush them, when you have them all in and installed, then you can bolt on the skid plate.

the inserts collapse and expand locking them in the hexagonal hole -
if it doesn't - drill through and mount with a long bolt.

Yes, the tool causes the inserts to expand and "lock" into the hole. Do it properly and don't overtorque them.

THEN... put the skid plate in position and use the bolts to hold the skid plates on.. again, don't over tighten these bolts either.

If done properly it works great. If not, it can become a nightmare.

Also, put a little Never seize on the bolts, so you can take them off again as needed.

Not really a CRD question though.
