I am coming up on my first oil change for my CRD. Any suggestions on which oil is best for this engine? I will be using the Liberty mostly around town with occasional trips offroad and maybe some long highway trips. I have seen Mobil-1 mentioned and Castrol Edge but don't know much about either.

I choose shell rotella t6 5w30. Many on here use that or Mobile 1 turbo diesel truck . Then there is mobile 0w40 the owners manual suggests either weight. Just be sure its full synthetic

From what I understand Mobil 1 0w40 isn't a good diesel oil. It is an API CF oil.
CF standard was Introduced in 1994. For off-road, indirect injected (ours are direct injected btw)
and other diesel engines including those using fuel with over 0.5% weight sulfur. I don't think this oil is rated for EGR use but I could be wrong. I have used this oil before, not in my liberty, but in my snowthrower ;-)

Mobil 1 5w40: Meets CJ-4, CI-4, and CH-4 which are designed for EGR turbocharged high revving diesels that are direct injected.

Rotella T6 is 5W-40 go look for yourselves
Synthetic Rotella, in the blue bottle has always been 5-40 :SOMBRERO:

And if your curious, look in the FSM for what to use in the EXPORT CRD's with the same engine

Checked out the autoparts stores and other outlets and it looks like Rottella T6 is the only oil available without special order. Walmart carries it as a regular item. Price isn't to bad either, $19.50/gal and $6 and change for a quart. Makes the decision pretty easy.

Rotella T6 all the way...

I won't run a 0W40 oil in my Jeep when it's 90 degrees outside. That's asking for trouble. Not to mention, it's $42 for 6 qts. versus $22 for 6 qts. of Rotella.

I typed the weight of t6 incorrectly it is 5w40. My local Wal-Mart has it for $19 or $19.50 all the time they do keep changing the price. They also have mobile one 5w40 turbo diesel truck for $23.99 I have not found the 0w40 any places but advance auto and pep boys both at $8 a quart. So the T6 is an easy choice unless you feel you have a need to go with amsoil like a few guys here. Amsoil to me seems expensive.

It seems to vary widley what oil Wal-Mart stores carry in my area. The store I visit the most rarley has Mobil diesel truck oil and only has rotella T6 about half the time.

But two stores about 6 miles away in oppiset directions almost always has T6 and Mobil diesel truck oil :banghead: But those two stores are not near other stores I frequent :ALONE:

So a special trip just for oil :5SHOTS:
